People sometimes meet each other in the most unexpected of circumstances. Preexisting situations or relationships may pale in comparison to the power of a newfound connection, even if all signs indicate that pursuing it would be a mistake. An attraction may also merely be allure and not be transformable into something real and lasting, but that doesn’t necessarily make the feelings that exist any less strong or powerful.

A business slump isn’t good for anyone, and if it continues for too long, jobs and livelihoods will surely be lost. It’s not possible to infuse customers into every sector, which is especially true for funeral homes because, as the saying goes, people are dying to get in, and there’s no other clientele.

Change takes time, but it has to start somewhere. The notion that people should simply wait for things to happen rather than actively advocate for them is a luxury that those with means and access can afford, and it’s also true that something that has been set in motion still doesn’t materialize overnight.

People are defined both by who they are and who they need to be in the environments in which they exist. Throughout history, attraction to the same sex has largely been condemned by mainstream society and criminalized alongside unpopular political affiliations.

A terminal diagnosis is typically met with dismay since it means a person’s life is coming to an end. The natural inclination is to do everything possible to prolong life and ensure that someone has as much time with the people they love as they can get. But there are those for whom living longer isn’t nearly as important as something they’d like to accomplish before they die, even if doing so means they’ll exert too much stress and resultingly have less time left to live.

Wild Horse Nine is the latest film from writer-director Martin McDonagh, a filmmaker who is certainly no stranger to critical acclaim or the awards conversation. John Malkovich stars as Chris, a veteran CIA officer with terminal cancer who travels to Easter Island with his friend and colleague, Lee (Sam Rockwell). Shortly after they arrive, Chris begins to question whether he and Lee were ever truly friends or whether there is an ulterior motive behind this trip.

Jesse Eisenberg’s The Debut marks his third feature-length film as a writer and director. His directorial debut, When You Finish Saving the World, didn’t receive much attention outside its Sundance premiere, but his follow-up, A Real Pain, certainly did with several Oscar nominations and a Best Supporting Actor win for Kieran Culkin. Eisenberg has been one of my favorite actors since I first saw him in one of his earliest roles in Roger Dodger.

Sharing a child after divorce isn’t easy under even the best of circumstances when two former partners get along relatively well and aren’t struggling financially. But when a mutual hatred consumes them both, the result can be problematic for the child, who may in turn lash out at one or both parents because they’re absorbing some of that tension.

It’s always fun to root for an underdog, especially when watching a movie where there aren’t real-life stakes or money on the line which could adversely affect anyone who’s betting on an always surefire loser to win. Fortunately, Cody Lightning’s Smudge the Blades approaches this topic in a lighthearted context, showcasing the Treaty 6 Blades, a hockey team in Alberta made up of Indigenous kids with impossible odds after they lose their hotheaded coach.
