Roommates are people who live together and may or may not be part of each other’s lives in any meaningful way. In its first season, Adults explored the antics of five twentysomethings who share one roof and rarely have a plan for what they’re going to do when life throws them curveballs. Season two returns with a reassured sense of itself, very prepared and well-structured in its comedy stylings in precisely the way that its characters are absolutely the opposite.

Between The Salt Path and Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, the Golden Globe-winning Gillian Anderson is clearly on a path making her a contender. Could this quiet, deeply moving drama finally earn the acclaimed actress her first Oscar nomination? Helmed by Marianne Elliott in her feature directorial debut, The Salt Path is based on Raynor Winn’s 2018 memoir and adapted for the screen by Rebecca Lenkiewicz.

Fiona Dourif has spent much of her career drawn to the darker storytelling, from the gleefully fun Chucky to the quieter psychological dread she loves as a viewer. But The Pitt has brought her something entirely different: a sprawling, deeply collaborative medical drama whose success changed her life almost overnight.

HBO’s Miss You, Love You sees Andrew Rannells starring opposite Allison Janney in a touching two-hander about navigating grief and complicated family and professional dynamics. Rannells is as adept at tearing through Jim Rash’s carefully constructed dialogue as he is at delivering the iconic performance that made him a Book of Mormon standout or landing some of Girls’ biggest laughs.

There is an intensity to Tom Pelphrey’s performances that makes even his quietest moments feel charged. Over his career, he has played characters ranging from volatile criminals to deeply vulnerable men, earning particular recognition for the emotional complexity he brings to each.

“There is typecasting. There are very narrow perspectives or views on our culture and the cultures from the region. We’re often looked at with judgments, or when we’re not being judged, we are two-dimensional characters. You know what I mean? The wife of someone, or the sister, or whatever it may be.

Jeff Kober is having a very good—and slightly surreal—Emmy year.
