Brandon Pfaadt squared off against Dustin May and the St Louis Cardinals in this Saturday afternoon game, and a three-run frame for Arizona proved the difference maker, as the home team leveled the series. Pfaadt pitched a 1-2-3 first, retiring the first three Cardinals in order, with Corbin Carroll making a great sliding catch to rob Ivan Herrera of a bloop single for the second out of the inning.

Gabi really helped Merrill out with the bases loaded and 1 out in the first by challenging a called Ball 4 and turning it into a Strike 3.

Say what you like about the extra wild-card, it has certainly made things interesting. There’s really only a handful of teams in the NL who are out of the picture. Five (the Rockies, Giants, Mets, Reds and Nationals) currently have playoff odds below four percent, according to Fangraphs. Everyone else is at least in double digits, with the Diamondbacks sitting at 24%.

“Gallen, we’re continuing to evaluate,” Lovullo said. “He is waiting for other opinions from other doctors. So we’ll just keep putting that off until we get everything complete.” Second opinions are often an inauspicious sign. That very process sometimes indicates a more serious injury can be the case, though it is certainly not a guarantee Gallen is destined for Tommy John surgery or anything similar.

At the All-Star break, the Diamondbacks are fighting the Cardinals and the Pirates over which team will be in best position to contend with the Marlins for the third Wild Card position in the NL.
