Benjamin Day, then 19, had become obsessed with the US TV drama “Dexter” and lured 24-year-old Maria Saceanu to an AirBnB room in Tividale which he had lined with plastic sheeting. Here, Day brutally murdered Maria, stabbing her 78 times. Day had previously pleaded not guilty to murder but changed his plea to guilty during a trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court yesterday (Tuesday 6th October).
St Basils trio to skydive 13,000ft on World Homelessness Day to support young people facing homelessness
St basils former CEO Jean Templeton, Director of Progression Louise Bourne and Health and Safety Manager David Adjei will take a tandem leap from 13,000ft on 10 October, raising vital funds for young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness across the West Midlands. Three St Basils colleagues will jump from a plane on World Homelessness Day in a fundraising challenge designed to highlight the urgent need for safe accommodation and support for young people facing homelessness.
One person dies after M5 collision near Halesowen
Police and West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) were called at just after 9.40pm last night (Tue) to the northbound carriageway between junctions 3 and 4. WMAS dispatched two paramedic officers and a MERIT trauma doctor with critical care paramedic to the scene. A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “On arrival, crews found the driver of the car but sadly, it quickly became clear the patient could not be saved and so was confirmed dead at the scene.
Mum shares the difference hospice care made to 20-year-old son as charity releases impact report
A Birmingham mum who once feared a hospice would be a ‘cold room’ has described how specialist care gave her 20-year-old son a peaceful place to die, surrounded by people who made him feel safe and cared for. When going into a hospice was suggested for her son Liam, Mary Goodwin wasn’t keen. “At the time when a hospice was first mentioned I wasn’t keen at all. I thought, it’s end of life, I pictured a cold room but there was so much care put in,” said Ms Goodwin.
CrossCountry customers encouraged to plan ahead for Christmas travel
Network Rail is carrying out major work to upgrade overhead power lines in and around Birmingham New Street station, replacing decades-old infrastructure and helping improve the long-term reliability of the vital railway hub. The five-day closure, from Thursday 24 December to Monday 28 December (inclusive), will impact CrossCountry services across the network, with changes to journeys and timetables while work is underway.
Harry Potter actor David Bradley (AKA Absolute Legend) joins Birmingham Hospice as Patron
David, who played Hogwarts caretaker Argus Filch, accepted the Patronage after a visit to the hospice’s Selly Park site where he met patients and families, along with staff and volunteers. The actor had a tour of the Inpatient Unit and the Living Well Centre, a bright friendly space designed to help people live well with life-limiting illnesses.
