In the announcement of ‘The Dynastic Woman: Power, Virtue, & Thousand-Year Families’, I argued that men and women have “complementary spheres of competence, with overlapping influence and mutual dependence” and that this finds its proper expression when the “husband represents the family in the public sphere; the wife cultivates the private sphere that makes public action possible.” Why, then, should the wife find her proper domain in the private sphere?

You walk into Western homes today and learn nothing about the people who live in them. Too often, you find the same grey sofas, the same white walls, the same televisions mounted above the same electric fireplaces. You find no indication of what the inhabitants believe, whom they descend from, or what they hold sacred. The modern home is a logistical space for consumer comfort. It testifies to nothing. The whitewash home flippers are the plague our civilization deserves.
