Formidable is a media and membership company aimed at high-level women. Our goal is to keep our audience informed while spotlighting diverse leaders who are experts in their fields and connecting these thought leaders to each other.
The company was started by longtime media executive Emily Parkhurst, who had seen for years how the vast majority of media coverage was written with a male lens. The argument was always that the majority of the audience was male, thus reporters should keep that in mind when reporting the news. It became a self-fulfilling prophecy that many traditional media companies have struggled to reverse. Meanwhile, coverage of “women’s issues” is largely relegated to the lifestyle sections or separate special publications. Florida plans to end vaccine requirements
Florida is working to become the first state to end vaccine mandates in public schools. As reported by TV station WESH, the announcement was made at a Wednesday news conference hosted by Gov. Ron DeSantis. Florida Department of Health Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Lapado said vaccine mandates are “wrong and drip with disdain and slavery.” DeSantis says parents should decide whether vaccines are appropriate for their children.
Women report high levels of financial stress, anxiety
There’s a huge disconnect between what women across the United States say they need and how close they are to achieving it. More than 90% consider their mental health to be highly important, yet only 35% rate it as excellent or very good. A survey by Guardian Life Insurance Co. of America also finds that approximately 70% identify as the primary financial decision-maker in their household.
America’s billionaire club
America had 1,135 billionaires in 2024, 927 more than in 2020, according to Altrata, a firm that tracks wealth across the United States. The Wall Street Journal reports that those billionaires are worth about $5.7 trillion, and that the worth of just three men — Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg — equals nearly a combined $1 trillion. Interestingly, only one-third of billionaires inherited their wealth.

Women don't 'leak' out of STEM careers, they're pushed
A team of 48 women and allies in STEMM (science, technology, engineering, math, and medicine) spanning six continents, including 16 coauthors, contributed to “Beyond the Pipeline.” What you probably already know: Women hold more than a third of all science, technology, engineering, and math jobs in the U.S., but a recent study estimates 35% of women with STEM degrees quit within five years.
How one health system saved $88M by investing in nurses
NYC Health + Hospitals employees celebrate their Pathway to Excellence with Distinction designation. What you probably already know: Nurse retention and turnover is a significant issue in health care. Nationally, the turnover rate of registered nurses hit 16.4% last year, while only 98,000 were hired, a 5.6% add rate. Turnover affects quality of care and creates financial pressure — it’s estimated that every registered nurse hired saves $79,100.
Nordstrom cuts back on influencer-based marketing
Nordstrom’s recent Anniversary Sale sparked a 17% increase in visits over the 2024 event in no small part because of its shift away from an influencer-heavy marketing strategy to one that focuses on wealthier families and older shoppers.
CVS, Walgreens navigate vaccine uncertainty
As health care groups including the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Infectious Diseases Society of America battle the CDC and FDA over the agencies’ rollback of Covid-19 vaccines, pharmacy chains CVS and Walgreens are limiting vaccines in some states. A CBS News report says CVS is offering vaccinations without a prescription in 34 states based on state laws.
Women-driven industries fuel job market
Women in the health care and social assistance fields are powering the U.S. job market, accounting for more than 38% of the 3.5 million jobs added the past two years. Women account for almost 80% of all employees in those two fields. More than 44% of physicians are now women, up from 37% a decade ago. Hiring Lab also found that health-care related job postings are 32% higher than pre-pandemic levels and considerably higher than other sectors.
