One of the defining aspects of Jewish life in the modern era, it is nonetheless still a matter of profound ambivalence and, at times, existential fear for the Jewish people. The essential creed of assimilation is that the Jews should seek to be just like everybody else.

Indeed, their entire worldview is based on it. Universally, they see themselves as hapless victims of Jews oppression, while their vicious invective and incitement are merely speaking truth to Jewish power.

Usually, the word serves as a “nuclear option,” a way of demonizing one’s opponent and detonating any possibility of consensus.

For American Jews, the last three years may someday be named “The Great Disillusionment.” That is, many myths of very long standing have been shattered, as American Jews have watched the United States slouch toward antisemitism with extraordinary speed.
