Beyond Radio

The Bear picked up rubbish on Friday as part of the Big Lancaster Spring Clean - a community and business-driven effort to tackle litter and keep our city centre and surrounding area clean. He was joined by Beth Pipe and Luke Edmondson from Beyond Radio, the Lancaster BID (Business Improvement District) team and other volunteers.

The week-long Big Sing at the Ashton Hall brought together young voices for a series of performances that were as inspiring as they were heartwarming. The Lancaster and District Schools’ Singing Festival, established in 1948, aims to provide a platform for primary school students to experience the joy of group performance, build confidence, and nurture their passion for music.

The show, held at Red Rose Community Centre in Morecambe on Saturday night, opened with a series of 'skills' contests where the judges do not score. Filip Danielewski of Lancaster Boxing Club, and Coastal's Edward Mason and Isaac Hermi, were all in action. In the scored bouts, Bob Howard of Coastal put in a spirited effort but lost via unanimous decision to Eddie Robshaw of United ABC.

March of the Mods takes place at Alhambra Live on Saturday, April 5 from 2pm until late. Bands including Ska Face, Rapture (Blondie tribute), The Coast, Urban Hymns (tribute to Richard Ashcroft and The Verve), The Rics and The Call Up will perform. Proceeds will go to the Teenage Cancer Trust. March of the Mods runs from 2pm until late Only limited tickets remain, priced £15, at Alhambralive.com . The event is for ages 18 and over.

Prom Fest takes place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (April 4 to 6) at 12 venues in the town. The festival is self-funded and organised by the local pubs and bars along Morecambe’s Promenade. The Prom Fest venues are Shore Thing, The Palatine, The Royal Bar and Shaker, Coffeys, the Lord Nelson, the Kings Arms, the Old Bank, The Pier, The Boardwalk, The Bath, The Bull and The Brittlestar.

The Friends of the Platform Morecambe and CancerCare North Lancashire and South Cumbria have announced their new partnership, and as part of this, during 2025 and 2026, The Platform will be opening its doors to four fundraisers at the popular venue, ensuring they can continue their work to provide free support and complimentary therapies for people affected by cancer, life-shortening illness and bereavement. Funds raised on these evenings will go entirely to both organisations.

Mark Leece, a camper van owner who is holding a protest event against efforts to ban the vehicles, has spoken to Beyond Radio saying the ban would be "discrimination". David Waddington, chair of Morecambe BID (Business Improvement District) has called for a chargeable parking area for motorhomes and camper vans as a compromise. And many residents, camper van owners and local businesses have also had their say on the issue.

Three fire engines from Morecambe and Lancaster were called to Regent Road at 8.17pm on Sunday. Witnesses posting on social media that the fire was at some derelict flats. A spokesperson for Lancashire Fire and Rescue said: "Fire service crews used six breathing apparatus, three hose reel jets and a positive pressure fan. "Crews remain in attendance."

Lancaster’s Helen Bingley OBE JP DL described the event at Shire Hall at Lancaster Castle as her ‘highlight of the year’, as a number of individuals and organisations were given High Sheriff Awards for their contribution to the local community. Helen, who steps down from her year in the role later this week, presented Escape2Make a certificate to recognise the development of much needed support for young people in Lancaster and Morecambe.

The Size have unveiled ‘The Lady in the Lake’ - Lady in the Lake – a new song inspired by the chilling true story of Margaret Hogg, whose body was found in Wast Water. Margaret Hogg, a former airline stewardess, was married to pilot Peter Hogg, 19 years her senior. Their marriage began to unravel due to Margaret’s open three-year affair with banker Graham Ryan. In October 1976, during a heated argument, Margaret physically attacked Peter. In response, he strangled her.
