Academy of Medical Sciences supports emerging research leaders

The Academy of Medical Sciences has awarded £6.3 million to early career researchers through its Springboard programme, including three awards funded by us. Now in its eleventh year, 2026 sees Springboard programme funding awarded to 55 researchers at 35 universities across the UK. Since launching in 2015, the programme has backed 471 researchers at 68 UK institutions, with over £50 million invested.

Prof Sir Magdi Yacoub honoured with BHF red plaque

Globally-renowned surgeon Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub has been honoured with a BHF Lifetime Achievement Award plaque at Harefield Hospital. The plaque celebrates his extraordinary contribution to pioneering cardiovascular science and innovation, most famously in heart transplantation and congenital heart disease surgery. Sir Magdi’s career has spanned a remarkable seven decades, including more than 20 years serving as BHF Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Imperial College London.

New AI tool can predict heart failure at least five years before it develops

A pioneering artificial intelligence (AI) tool can predict a person’s chance of developing heart failure at least five years before the debilitating condition develops, according to new research we've funded published today in Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Researchers say the program is the first ever that can accurately predict heart failure using routine cardiac CT scans performed to investigate chest pain or other conditions.

Having fun with fitness could motivate Brits to exercise more, new BHF survey suggests

A quarter of Brits say their top fitness goal this spring and summer is simply to have fun and enjoy themselves, our recent survey found. We surveyed 4537 adults from across the UK about their fitness goals and beliefs. The most popular fitness goal for spring and summer 2026 was revealed as 'maintaining fitness', with 30 per cent of respondents selecting this answer. Having fun and enjoying themselves came in second, with a quarter (24 per cent) agreeing this was their main aim.

We have issued advice to help people protect their hearts when making food choices to keep their gut healthy and feed their ‘good’ gut bacteria. BHF commits £28 million to refreshed PhD programme

We have awarded £28 million to seven university-led consortia to deliver the latest round of our 4‑year PhD programme. The funding will support 141 students to begin their 4-year PhDs between 2026 and 2029. For the first time, funding for our 4-year PhD programme has been awarded to consortia of universities, which include collaborations with industry.
