On the evening of Aug. 26, The New York City Sikh Council held an interfaith rally and candlelit vigil in honor of 27-year-old Gurdeep Singh and 44-year-old MD Yousef. Attendees and organizers called for an immediate end to gun violence. The gathering brought together Black and Brown leaders, local elected officials and neighborhood residents at the intersection of Crescent St. and Stanley Ave. in East New York.
Brooklyn to Celebrate Dominican Music at Prospect Park
Brooklyn’s Dominican community will take center stage Saturday as Dominican Night at the Bandshell brings a free evening of music and culture to Prospect Park. Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso and BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! will host the event Aug. 29 at the Lena Horne Bandshell, 141 Prospect Park West. Doors open at 5:00pm, with the show beginning at 6:00pm. Admission is free and entry is first-come, first-served.
Federal Judge Blocks Trump's Proposed Changes to Mail-In Ballots
After New York Attorney General Letitia James joined a multistate lawsuit challenging a new U.S. Postal Service rule governing mail-in ballots ahead of the November 2026 midterm elections, according to a press release. As of Aug. 27, U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani has blocked the proposed rule, according to CBS. The lawsuit, filed Wednesday, Aug. 26, challenged requirements issued by USPS under an executive order from President Donald Trump.
More Than 4,200 New Yorkers Have Received Doula Care Since 2022
New York City’s Citywide Doula Initiative has provided doula care to more than 4,200 people since launching in 2022, expanding free support for pregnant New Yorkers in communities facing health and socioeconomic inequities. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene marked the milestone Aug. 24 while recognizing six hospitals that completed the initiative’s Doula-Friendly Hospital Program.

2 Suspects Sought for Robbing Men Trying to Buy PS5 From Facebook
Officers say the scammers pulled a gun on each man, stealing $2,400 from the first and $250 from the second. Arrest Made in Morris Heights Stabbing That Left One Man Dead, Another Wounded
Jeffrey Jorge, 37, of Brooklyn, was taken into custody on Thursday afternoon - less than 24 hours after he allegedly carried out the brazen attack that killed 32-year-old Rashaun Shettlewood, of the Bronx. An arrest was made in connection to a stabbing in Morris Heights that left one man dead and another wounded, police say.

Mayor Mamdani Announces $36 Million Renovation of Eastern Parkway Library
Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Department of Design and Construction Commissioner Paul A. Ochoa and Brooklyn Public Library President and CEO Linda E. Johnson announced the start of a $36 million renovation of Eastern Parkway Library in Crown Heights on Aug. 27, according to a press release from the Office of the Mayor.
