You’re either a fan of Frank Herbert’s Dune novels or you aren’t. And you’re either a fan of the adaptations or you don’t think they match Herbert’s vision. Whichever you are, the final chapter of Denis Villeneuve’s take, Dune Part Three, is on its way. The second trailer is here, and it looks a lot like the trailers to Villeneuve’s first two entries. Once you’ve seen a film by Denis Villeneuve, you can spot his work instantly.
Review by Elizabeth C. Bunce We loved 2019’s wedding-gone-wrong Ready or Not, starring Samara Weaving as a bride having the worst honeymoon ever (reviewed here at borg). Now seven years later, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett return to the scene of the crime in Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, and it’s like no time at all has passed.
Review by C.J. Bunce Most of the world only encountered bandleader, actor, and businessman Desi Arnaz from the role and series he made famous with his wife, comedienne Lucille Ball on their classic TV series I Love Lucy.
Review by C.J. Bunce It was going to be hard for Jon Favreau to mess up a movie sequel to the Lucasfilm/Disney+ series The Mandalorian. Still in theaters and the perfect summer blockbuster, The Mandalorian and Groguis packed full of familiar characters, creatures, environments, costumes, props, and cross-references from across the Star Wars franchise.
Review by C.J. Bunce In the first minutes of the Disney+ animated series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, you’re probably going to ask: What the heck is going on? Where does this fit into the rest of the Marvel universe? You may recognize the 1960s style animation (it looks a lot like the art in the MTV Daria series), the Alex Toth influence in character design, and the mix of characters from the Marvel universe in relationship to everything else you’ve seen before related to Spider-Man.
Like Dr. Ian Malcolm says it in Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park, the studio and estates behind a fall competition show were likely preoccupied with whether or not they could, and didn’t stop to think if they should. The show is Wonka’s The Golden Ticket. Billed as a competition show, it looks much closer to the vetted and over-acted competition shows on the food networks. It’s supposed to tug on your nostalgia for the Gene Wilder movie and the original Raold Dahl novel.
Despite being the gazillionth sci-fi movie to use David Bowie’s Space Oddity as the song for its trailer, Illumination Entertainment’s next animated movie seems like it may just capture all the sci-fi/romance/comedy vibes it promises. Directed by a team including Eric Guillon, Claire Dodgson, and Jonathan del Val, Not Alone is a double entendre for two single people finding each other and a trio of alien beings trying to take E.T.’s advice and go home.
Version 1.0.0 Review by C.J. Bunce It’s no accident Quacky rhymes with wacky. At least that’s apt when it comes to cartoonist Jim Woodring’s new look at his familiar character Frank in the illustrated Big Little Book-formatted book Quacky, available for pre-order now here at Amazon.
