The 15th-ranked Blinn College softball team snapped a three-game skid by earning a doubleheader split with No. 19 Galveston College on Wednesday at Hohlt Park in Brenham. Galveston claimed game one of the Region 14 South twin bill 5-1 before the Buccaneers responded with a decisive 11-4 victory in the finale. Blinn (18-8, 4-4 South) struggled out of the gate as the Whitecaps took control of the opener.

Brenham brought three medals home in consolation brackets with just two weeks left before its district tournament. Madilyn Schaper was the only singles medalist in the girls singles consolation bracket.

Senator Lois Kolkhorst (R-Brenham) received two committee chair assignments from Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick. Kolkhorst will serve as the chair of the Sunset Advisory Commission while being re-appointed as the chair of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee. “It is an honor to be named chair of the Sunset Advisory Commission, as it is one of the most important and sought-after positions in the Legislature,” Kolkhorst said.

The Brenham Cubs are halfway through their district golf tournament and are in position for a breakthrough result. Brenham finished the first round of the District 17-5A championships at The Golf Club at Margaritaville in Montgomery on Wednesday in second place after a first-round team score of 31-over par. The Cubs are three shots behind College Station in the race for the district title.

We all remember the old cellular commercial where the man walked into various remote locations asking, “Can you hear me now?” It was a brilliant campaign because it touched on a universal frustration. Recently, that phrase took on a much more personal meaning for me. I just received my hearing aids. And the truth is: I can actually hear you—and everyone else—now. My hearing didn’t vanish overnight; it ebbed away gradually until I reached the inevitable “It’s time” moment.

Lake Creek ran away from Brenham with 12 runs in the third and fourth innings of a 12-0 contest to close the first round of District 17-5A play. Brenham (9-12, 2-4 district) took its second consecutive road loss. The Cubettes have scored just one run in their last two losses.

The Cubs showed no signs of letting outside noise affect them on Tuesday in a dominant road performance at Huntsville.

Nicholas Hodell/Banner-Press photo The Burton Panthers wasted no time claiming victory on Tuesday in a dominant 17-0 three-inning win over Snook at Burton High School. Burton (13-3, 2-1 district) scored at least 11 runs for the fourth time in its last six games, including 11 runs in the first inning alone. Pitcher Tyler Witt also earned a three-inning no-hitter with seven strikeouts. Witt was given all the run support he needed after he struck out the side in the top of the first.

Grace Lutheran’s small track and field program showed its might at the second Kardia High School and Middle School meet at Waller High School on March 21. Individual Mustangs placed well among Houston-area private and Christian schools. Junior Monnica Colanter starred for the Mustang high school program with three top-five finishes. She started in the field with a 13-foot, 6-inch jump in the girls long jump for a second-place finish. Colanter added two fifth-place finishes on the track.
