The conversation surrounding the Myles Garrett trade has centered almost entirely on the statistical void his departure creates, and for good reason given that he set the single-season sack record just a year ago. But Mary Kay Cabot recently offered a perspective that most of the national coverage has overlooked entirely. Cabot laid out the hidden benefits of the Garrett trade, saying that Verse’s leadership may become a unifier for the defense, unlike the environment with Garrett.
The quarterback saga in Cleveland is likely something that is going to continue until the end of the preseason. Everyone seems to have a different take on the situation, but ultimately, the Browns are going to let their play in training camp and the preseason do the talking. Both players have different skill sets that make them appealing options as the starting quarterbacks. Insider Mary Kay Cabot recently explained why she believes Deshaun Watson holds the edge in this competition.
The optimism surrounding Jared Verse’s arrival in Cleveland has been well documented, but not every voice covering this team is ready to assume the defensive transition will be seamless.
With more than two weeks still to go before veterans are required to report to Cleveland Browns training camp, the team’s quarterback competition is currently in a phase of dueling workout videos. While these social media posts are encouraging in that they demonstrate Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders are taking their battle for the starting job seriously, they likely will have little to no effect on who will actually get the job.

One of the biggest adjustments an NFL wide receiver has to make is that he isn’t going to get the ball on every play. That is difficult to accept for some, which is why there is so much turmoil at the position around the league, year after year. It is also a hard lesson for a rookie to learn, after likely being the focal point of his offense in college. That is why the Cleveland Browns are making sure every one of their wide receivers is on the same page entering this season.
The Cleveland Browns are preparing to unveil a brand-new offense in the 2026 season. With as many as nine new starters, no one really knows what to expect from the revamped unit. That means there is a huge opportunity for any of the skill-position players to take over as the focal point of the attack. How the quarterback competition shakes out will ultimately have the biggest impact on who will emerge.

The Cleveland Browns maintain that they would not have traded Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams if they had not gotten Jared Verse as part of the return. The younger edge rusher was seen as an immediate replacement for this season and a new building block for the future. Then, after he arrived in Cleveland, Verse looked to be even more than the Browns were hoping for. His attitude and energy added life to the defense that it didn’t necessarily have under Garrett.
The Cleveland Browns’ offense is almost starting from scratch, with a new head coach and first-time coordinator, a completely rebuilt offensive line, an upgraded wide receiver group, and a quarterback competition that will result in someone who has made just seven starts over the past two seasons. There may be just three players involved who had key roles last season.
