The most prominent Black American architect of his generation, Paul R. Williams helped shape his native Los Angeles during its rapid growth from the 1920s through the early 1970s. Acclaimed as an architect to the stars, he brought his innovation and rigor to stylistically diverse residential, civic, religious, commercial, and hospitality projects that ranged from ambitious public housing to iconic hotels in Southern California, Las Vegas, and Latin America.

Between 1925 and 1985, Americans were offered an astonishing array of domestic utopias. Self-cleaning kitchens, plastic houses assembled in a day, push-button appliances, and desktop computers all shaped aspirations about how to live. Through architectural models, drawings, photographs, films, and objects ranging from sinks to television sets, Home of the Future traces how the American home of tomorrow was imagined, packaged, and sold—by whom, and for whom.

Studio Gang has been named the recipient of the 2026 AIA Chicago Firm Award, the highest honor presented by the Chicago chapter of the American Institute of Architects to a local architecture firm. The Harvard University Graduate School of Design has named London-based architect and writer Ellen Peirson the recipient of the 2026 Wheelwright Prize, awarding her $100,000 to support research into contemporary architecture with a global focus. Peirson’s winning proposal, Ultra-Processed Kitchens: Infrastructures of Extraction in the Home, examines the environmental and social impacts embedded within domestic kitchens.

In Los Angeles, AIA|LA has revealed the winners of its 2026 Board of Directors Awards, a group of architects, educators, advocates, and organizations shaping the profession well beyond the drawing board. Leading the field of honorees are Annie Chu and Rick Gooding of Chu-Gooding, who will receive the chapter's highest distinction, the AIA|LA Gold Medal, honoring more than three decades of influential work that has helped define Los Angeles' civic and cultural landscape.

A proposal to repurpose decommissioned New Routemaster buses into moveable playgrounds has won this year’s Davidson Prize. Called PLAYDECK, the winning project was conceived by R.U.A Studio, an interdisciplinary team comprising architects Ru Quan Phuah and Shaun Thomas, landscape architect and videographer Esther Yik Chi Chan, landscape architect and writer Carmen Du, and Jessica Huynh, all of WW+P Architects.
