Zeta Charter Schools opened a new elementary and middle school on Thursday, Sept. 17., which will educate 600 students in East Tremont. The Zeta Bronx Tremont Park Upper Elementary and Middle School campus, located at 1910 Arthur Ave, will serve students third through eighth grade. Zeta founder and CEO Emily Kim and Principal Charlene Caranda celebrated the new campus and the opportunities ahead for students at a ribbon cutting on the new campus.

The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene hosted a town hall at Metropolitan College on Sept. 15 to update residents on the outbreak, address concerns and explain the measures the city has taken to contain it. The Health Department previously conducted a preliminary investigation that included testing of 24 cooling towers in zip codes 10451 and 10456. The testing determines whether Legionella bacteria DNA is present in water samples.

“That’s what this remembrance is about and that’s what this day is about. It’s about the first responders, and it’s about, of course, the families who have survived all those days, months, and years of [grieving] people they lost on that horrible day,” Axelbank said. In a respectful show of cross-cultural community, interfaith prayers were led by NYPD Inspector and Bishop Michael Lopez, Bishop Courtney A.

TIME ranked CUNY’s Lehman College No. 36 on its “America’s Best Colleges of 2026-2027” inaugural edition — which features a list of the 100 best educational institutions in the country according to the publication. Each ranked college was scored in three categories — student outcomes, learning environment and attractiveness to students, along with an overall final rating. Lehman College received a final rating of 84.34, which included a score of 91.04 for student outcomes.

Tenants at 2440 Walton Ave. rallied Sept. 15 outside their Fordham Heights apartment building, calling for a court-appointed administrator as they remain in limbo over repairs, relocation assistance and a pending Housing Court case.

With upwards of 175 attendees, the Sept. 3 event primarily consisted of food and beverage tasting, with a variety of selections from a list of more than 20 local vendors. The event generated more than $50,000 in proceeds, which will directly benefit fundraising efforts for vital programs and services at the Castle Hill YMCA, including swim lessons, teen initiatives, sports programs, afterschool programs and membership financial assistance.

The Bronx Community Foundation collaborated with local Assemblywoman Amanda Septimo, who represents the 84th Assembly District, for a backpack and school supplies giveaway at the Mott Haven Houses on Aug. 27, followed by a second giveaway in partnership with local initiatives BRAG and Bronx Spreading Love on Aug. 28 in Co-op City. A total of 600 backpacks were given away at the two events, according to the Bronx Community Foundation.

NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi | North Central Bronx held its annual 9/11 remembrance ceremony Friday, Sept. 11, at the hospital’s Memorial Garden, a tradition that has continued for more than two decades. Children from P.S. 108 opened this year’s ceremony with song before names were read aloud inside the memorial garden. Those in attendance later placed flowers at the memorial. The participation of the students carried particular meaning on the 25th anniversary.

“The opening of the Bronx School of Hip Hop represents our commitment to expanding access to creative pathways for our youth,” Gibson said in a statement. The public high school at 1600 Webster Ave. is starting with ninth graders and is expected to expand to grades nine through 12. State education records project that the school will eventually serve 500 students. Its curriculum connects academic subjects with the five elements of hip-hop: emceeing, DJing, graffiti, breaking and knowledge of self.

iNine Bistro opened in 2018, specializing in Afro-fusion cuisine. Bar 47 opened in 2022, bringing the only pool table to the neighborhood, and over the weekend, Pour BX Wine Bar celebrated their official grand opening to a bevy of excited locals.
