Researchers at Mount Royal University want to know how immigrants use and consume news to better understand how media can influence accuracy, trust and politics. The study includes first and second-generation immigrants and the so-called 1.5-generation — people born in one country and move to a new country during childhood or early adolescence.

Police in Calgary played Disney music from their cruisers as they continued to search for a missing 11-year-old boy who is non-verbal, autistic and can easily get scared when approached by strangers. An Alberta Emergency Alert buzzed on phones across the province on Saturday afternoon for Parker, who was last seen Thursday afternoon in Calgary’s north end. Calgary police said in a statement he was shirtless, wearing grey shorts and black noise-cancelling headphones.

A strong storm system swept through south-central Alberta, with at least one tornado confirmed to have touched down. The Northern Tornadoes Project says one twister touched down in Rocky Mountain House, between Calgary and Edmonton. The group, a collaboration between Western University and ImpactWX,   says there are reports of some damage, but nothing has been verified. They say a team will be sent into the field on Sunday to gather more information.

Mount Royal University staff are working alongside law enforcement to control a recent cyberattack that unfolded earlier in June, leaving most of MRU’s webpages, including student and faculty portals, inaccessible. The school has now confirmed that the incident was a ransomware attack. In addition, MRU said the attack primarily affected the school’s “H drive,” a shared drive used to store digital data for both students and staff.

A large majority of Canadians in a recent poll said they worry that artificial intelligence data centres will hike their power bills and harm the environment. In the Leger poll, 81 per cent of respondents said they are concerned about the prospect of data centres leading to spikes in their household electricity bills.

Alexander Sun is a 15-year-old International Bachelorette student who has played competitive hockey for most of his childhood. He says the sport has taught him very valuable life lessons throughout his time playing — lessons that still help him navigate the world today. Sun wants to share the benefits that hockey has given him with others, especially with students who have trouble with the social and regimented aspects of team-based sports.

Alberta’s NDP leader says he’ll seek a Calgary seat in the next general vote instead of running for re-election in Edmonton. Naheed Nenshi, who was mayor of Calgary for 11 years before switching to provincial politics, announced his decision Thursday in an online letter to his constituents in Edmonton-Strathcona.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says a byelection in Calgary won’t be called until Albertans have more time for politics. “In the middle of summer people probably aren’t paying that much attention to politics,” Smith told reporters Thursday in Edmonton.

A judge has extended a special court order freezing the assets of a prominent Alberta separatist as part of an ongoing trust fund dispute with a First Nation. Justice John Gill said Wednesday the extension was justified given questions surrounding payments from the fund and surrounding the person in charge of it – Jeffrey Rath.
