After losing in Class 1A substate baseball finals each of the last two seasons, the Crusaders downed Lenox, 3-1, Tuesday at Valley High School, punching their first ticket to the state tournament since 2019.

Cindy Lou (Said) Mason, 67, of Jefferson, Iowa, passed away on July 8, 2026. Cindy was born on February 23, 1959, in Bremerhaven, Germany, where her father was stationed while serving in the Navy. She was welcomed into the loving family of Cliff and Millie Said. Cindy's childhood was full of moves and new adventures, beginning in Fort Dodge, Iowa, and later spent several years in New Jersey.

Robert Gerald “Bob” Behrens, 84, of Carroll, Iowa, passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family, at his home on Monday, July 13, 2026. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, July 17, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Halbur. Father Terry Roder will celebrate the Mass. Music will be provided by Julie Sibbel, Sherry Loughran and the St. Augustine Choir. Mass servers will be Aiden Handlos and Aubrey Behrens. Doug Wanninger will be the lector.

A Memorial Service for Brandon Mitchell, 34, of Jefferson was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 13, 2026 at Slininger-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jefferson. Pastor Rob Ramariz of Water's Edge Community Church, Ogden, Iowa, officiated. Memorials are suggested to the Kavanagh Hospice House in Des Moines, Iowa. Brandon Michael Mitchell, 34, of Jefferson, Iowa, passed away on July 7, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Michael Greg Waugh, born September 5, 1973, died by suicide on July 1st, 2026. He was 52. Mike was a beloved son, brother, uncle and friend. He is loved, missed, mourned and remembered. Mike was born in Atlantic Iowa and spent the majority of his early life in Jefferson Iowa, graduating from Jefferson-Scranton High School in 1992.
Norma Jean Covault
Norma Jean (Wynkoop) Covault brought warmth and nurturing care to everyone she loved. Norma was born in Doniphan County, Kansas on July 23, 1939, just 40 days before Germany invaded Poland initiating World War II, to Charles Wynkoop and Beulah (Sultzer) Wynkoop Doebert. Her parents preceded her in death, as did each of her siblings: Myrtle Godding; Ruby Bruce; Dory Thompson; Charles (Butch) Wynkoop; and William (Billy) Wynkoop.
