The state of migration in Australia Australia's net overseas migration (NOM) surged after the pandemic as borders reopened and bipartisan policy deliberately allowed expanded intake to address acute workforce shortages. That surge has now reversed. NOM has fallen by more than 250,000 since its September 2023 peak, down to 301,000, and the Federal Government's 2026-27 Budget now forecasts it will reach 225,000 by 2027-28, roughly in line with pre-pandemic levels.
Healthcare workforce futures: The system needs people and capability
If we keep describing the future health workforce problem as a “shortage,” we will keep designing the insufficient solutions. The health system is not only running out of people — it is running out of capability, coherence and leadership at precisely the moment complexity is accelerating. In the workforce strategies there is a critical enabling line: management and leadership.
Why our ageing population in regional Australia needs more from Support at Home
The way communities include and care for their ageing members reflects who they are and what they value. The Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety uncovered systematic failures, stories of neglect, and long waitlists for in-home care. An overhaul of fragmented funding models is now underway, seeking to create a single system for Australians who need help to continue living at home independently.
Are integrated utility precincts the answer to Victoria’s data centre problem?
A proposed mega data centre precinct at Plumpton, north-west of Melbourne, has given Victoria a glimpse of the scale of the infrastructure challenge now arriving with artificial intelligence. The project, reported by The Age as being as large as 175 MCG fields and requiring 2.4GW of power, has already drawn criticism in State Parliament. That scrutiny is unsurprising. A facility of that scale is a major energy, water, land-use and planning decision.
State of the Nation Report
State of the Nation 2026 - explore the report, data and event Business dynamism continues to fall, with productivity growth, employing-business rates, innovation and competitiveness all below where they need to be. Skills, training and R&D investment remain below potential, with weak workplace training, falling apprenticeships and widespread skills shortages. Emissions and clean-energy uptake are moving in the right direction, but Australia must accelerate momentum to meet the 2035 target.

Governing AI in healthcare: why smart governance unlocks productivity
Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly framed as a productivity solution for healthcare systems under pressure, even in the absence of robust real-world evidence of realised benefits. At the same time, AI is often treated as a governance challenge that must be tightly constrained or delayed. Too often AI-related decision making is framed as needing to move quickly and accept risk, or govern carefully and sacrifice productivity. This is a false choice.
