Overview Since 2016, the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) has provided deposit-free LPG connections to over 105 million women from low-income households (PMUY, as of July 2026). This has reshaped India's clean cooking landscape. Yet solid fuel use remains widespread: NFHS-5 (2019–21) reports 56 per cent of rural households still cook with firewood, dung cakes, or coal; and HCES 2023–24 indicates rural firewood use at 47 per cent.

Overview Behavioural and demand-side change is increasingly recognised in research as a mitigation lever, particularly in passenger transport. Yet, due to the absence of uniform measurement and quantification, it remains largely absent from formal climate policy and from the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) of major economies, even as the IPCC and UNEP underscore its potential.

Overview This issue brief examines a widening gap in India's corporate sustainability reporting: while greenhouse gas (GHG) disclosure under the BRSR framework is consistent and standardised, reporting on criteria air pollutants, PM, SO2, and NOX remains scattered and incomplete.

Overview India's electricity demand crossed 270 GW in May 2026 and is growing fast — but it is also becoming more volatile, with peak demand rising faster than overall demand and concentrating in short windows. This makes procurement decisions harder and costlier: the average cost of electricity supply rose by 30 per cent between 2017 and 2024, leaving discoms with less room to invest in network upgrades.
