Advances in artificial intelligence, biotechnology and the use of health data are widely regarded as among the most significant technological leaps in healthcare in decades. The European Regional Development Fund and Region Västra Götaland are now investing SEK 25 million in the Precision Platform, a new initiative designed to make it easier to develop, test and implement the next generation of personalised solutions for prevention, diagnostics and treatment.

The researchers have analysed all fatal crashes involving electric scooters, electric bicycles and conventional bicycles in Sweden between 2016 and 2024. Alcohol is often a factor in fatal crashes occurring with all three of these vehicle types – but the figures for electric scooters stand out. Of the fatal e-scooter crashes, 44 per cent of the riders were under the influence of alcohol, compared to 27 per cent among e-bike riders and 13 per cent among cyclists.

That question brought together leaders from industry, academia and public funding organisations at Chalmers University of Technology for the seminar Collaborate for Breakthrough. Across discussions on electrification, aerospace, AI, advanced manufacturing and industrial policy, one message emerged particularly clearly: Breakthroughs no longer happen in isolation. Instead, they emerge where technologies, disciplines, organisations and people connect over time.

Berusningsnivåerna var också höga, i alla tre grupperna.

For many students, research seems like something that begins only after graduation. Through the Research Associate Programme, students instead have the opportunity to join a research group during their studies and develop their own research project together with researchers at Chalmers. The aim is to introduce students to research at an early stage while helping to nurture the next generation of researchers.

“I knew I was interested in research, but I didn't really know what a research career looked like or what it actually meant to work as a researcher,” says Yuchen Liu. Through the Production Area of Advance Research Associate Programme, she had the opportunity to work with a research group at the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

– Jag visste att jag var intresserad av forskning, men jag hade ingen aning om hur forskarlivet såg ut eller vad det faktiskt innebär att arbeta som forskare, säger Yuchen Liu. Genom styrkeområde Produktions Amanuensprogram fick hon möjlighet att arbeta i en forskargrupp vid institutionen Mechanical Engineering. Där utvecklade hon, tillsammans med handledarna Ebru Turanoglu Bekar, universitetslektor, och doktoranden Siyuan Chen, ett eget forskningsprojekt om AI-baserat prediktivt underhåll.

Much of the debate around AI focuses on technology, computing power and algorithms. In Almedalen, however, the discussion quickly moved beyond the relationship between Sweden and India. Instead, it centred on how a small country like Sweden can remain competitive in a world where AI is rapidly transforming economies, labour markets and innovation systems.

I debatten om AI handlar mycket om teknik, datorkraft och algoritmer. Men i Almedalen kom diskussionen snabbt att handla om något större än relationen mellan Sverige och Indien.
