POSCO eyes swift development of Argentina lithium business with $700M loan
South Korea's hopes to accelerate the development of its brine lithium project in Argentina after securing a $700 million loan, the company said in an Aug. 28 statement. , POSCO Holdings' brine lithium production subsidiary, received approval on Aug. 4 for the short-term loan line from IDB Invest, the private investment agency of the Inter-American Development Bank Group.

The Brazilian Executive Management Committee of the Foreign Trade Chamber began discussions on Aug. 27 regarding an extension of the increased import tariff on some polymers and chemical products. Among the requests is maintaining the 20% tariff on polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) imports that replaced the previous 12.6% tariff.

Evonik to build drug product plant in Canada
Evonik Industries AG is investing more than 150 million Canadian dollars ($108 million) in a new good manufacturing practice (GMP) drug product manufacturing facility for lipid-based drug delivery at Vancouver, Canada. Drug product production is planned to begin at the end of 2029, the company said in a statement Aug. 27. Evonik’s investment is supported by the Canadian federal government’s Strategic Response Fund with up to 68 million Canadian dollars, it said.
Solstice, Element terminate $14.5B acquisition
Solstice Advanced Materials Inc. (Morris Plains, New Jersey) and Element Solutions Inc. (Miami) have announced that following conversations with shareholders and company boards they have entered into a mutual agreement to terminate Solstice’s acquisition of Element. The companies announced the $14.5 billion cash-and-stock transaction in July. Element Solutions’ full-year 2025 adjusted EBITDA was $609 million, which would’ve represented a 23.8x multiple on the transaction price.

Rare earths recycler Cyclic Materials Inc. has announced the completion of a $75 million financing round to accelerate the deployment of the company’s rare earth recycling campus in South Carolina. This latest round brings Cyclic’s total equity funding to $237 million. The new capital will accelerate Cyclic’s expansion of its US Hub-and-Spoke infrastructure, with plans to break ground on an integrated rare earth recycling campus in South Carolina in the fourth quarter of 2026, the company said.
