The next time you’re heading west on the I-90 out of town from Gillette, WY, take the north exit on South Burma and you’ll find yourself just a few minutes away from the Rock-Paper-Scissors Sculpture. Time it right and you can celebrate World Rock, Paper, Scissors Day on August 27th. The roadside attraction stands outside the Gillette News Record and features the three different items stacked on top of another with the scissors on top.
When Scissors go to the Movies
Your favourite household tool has a dark side Any fan of horror and action movies knows scissors can be absolutely lethal, even if it is a lot more common to go all slasher with a knife. We did some digging into some movie lore to pull some of the more colourful – i.e. bloody – cinematic uses of everyone’s favourite household tool. One of the advantages of working scissors into your frightfest is it tends to be unexpected. A serious slasher psychopath tends to go for a knife as a weapon.
The Unwavering Spirit of Scissors
In 2020, satirical online publication The Onion published an article titled, "10 Breathtaking Photos that Perfectly Capture the Unwavering Spirit of Scissors". In classic satirical style, the writer attempts to mock a mundane item by elevating it to mythical proportions.

Supply chains are a huge challenge in the world of heritage, hand-crafted scissors One of the most interesting (and at times challenging!) aspects of finding and marketing heritage, hand crafted scissors is the supply chain. It is complicated, it is constrained, and traversing it can take a very long time When you’re taking about making a high-quality physical item like our scissors, there are no shortcuts.
Hand Strength:It's A Thing
Why many of us are losing our grip One of our scissor makers, William Whiteley, was founded in 1760, at the dawn of the Industrial Revolution. Unparalleled by almost any other event in human history, Industrialization rapidly ushered in dramatic social and economic upheaval - both good and bad: "Before the Industrial Revolution, artisans with specialized skills produced most of Europe’s manufactured goods.
"What are the extended pivot gizmos meant for?"
Earlier this month, we announced a very exciting new (to us) scissor model: the Fennek Grandi Grandi Forbici (literally "GREAT BIG SCISSORS" in Italian). Clocking in at a majestic 12 inches, the "GG Forbici" have been in production since Fennek was founded in Premana in 1895. We let our newsletter subscribers know first (as we do) and then decided to tell the world, via ads in The New Yorker magazine and Canada's The Globe & Mail newspaper.
Touch my fabric scissors and I will cut you!
There are two common scissor problems that have plagued families for centuries. One is, "Where are my good scissors when I need them?!" Hands up if your parents left crappy scissors around the house and hid their fabric or embroidery scissors for serious work. Number two crops up when someone actually finds the good scissors and wants to cut paper. If that happens, blood pressure rises, things are thrown and tears are cried. Time to call the police.
Using Kitchen Scissors #4: Shelling Lobster
The latest in our new video series: Top 5 Uses for Kitchen Scissors Shelling lobster can be incredibly messy, and between sharp spines and slippery knives, downright dangerous! In our latest episode of the Top 5 Uses for Kitchen Scissors video series, we show you how simple and fuss-free it can be to shell lobster when you have the right tools.
International Left-Handers Day: August 13th
Luxury scissors for the other 15% August 13th is International Left-Handers Day, but since most of us are right-handed, you'd probably never even thought about left-handed scissors until you tried to cut the finger nails on your right hand using your left. Now you get it; It’s hard to do that, right? Welcome to the lefties’ world where everything is built for righties. It can be an eyeopener and a good reminder that 10-15% of the general population is poorly served when it comes to scissors.
How to Use Kitchen Scissors: Prepping Fish
The latest in our video series: Top 5 Uses for Kitchen Scissors This weeks' video is short and sweet, and really more about the technical reasons why scissors are so great for cutting fish than how to cut fish (unless you're cleaning a whole one, it's pretty straightforward!) While I would love to have knives as sharp as those of a professional chef, and we do take care of our knives, I've still had the experience of having to work to slice through the skin on a piece of salmon or (regional...
