Clear Roads is a national research consortium focused on rigorous testing of winter maintenance materials, equipment and methods for use by highway maintenance crews.
Since getting under way in 2004, Clear Roads has grown to include 39 member agencies, each contributing $25,000 annually to fund research and technology transfer efforts. Representatives from the participating departments of transportation meet twice a year to discuss and prioritize projects, share effective practices, and review research results. Source

New Clear Roads Research: Leveraging the Deicing Benefits of Solar Radiation
Vegetation that grows along roadside areas can shade the pavement and slow the melting of snow and ice. So it stands to reason that removing the vegetation and increasing sunlight exposure could increase snow and ice melt, and potentially reduce the need for chemical deicers.
New Clear Roads Research: Tracking Chloride Runoff Through Different Soils
Understanding how chloride deicers move, disperse in, or migrate through different types of soils is critical to helping maintenance managers identify sensitive areas and adjust chloride applications to mitigate environmental impacts. Test results from this Clear Roads project were used to produce a fact sheet that can help agencies develop a localized maintenance treatment plan.
