This short story was written for the Soaring Twenties Social Club (STSC) Symposium. The STSC is a small, exclusive online speakeasy where a dauntless band of raconteurs, writers, artists, philosophers, flaneurs, musicians, idlers, and bohemians share ideas and companionship. Occasionally, STSC members create something around a set theme. Devotion, not discipline. Someone I follow recently posted a short update that they had switched from the idea of motivating themselves with discipline to, instead, focusing on devotion to their craft. This idea immediately struck a chord with me. Our society glorifies discipline. And I, myself, have, in the past, recommended a sort of extreme discipline to artists in their marketing (and creative) efforts. I believed what separated the successful from the unsuccessful was discipline.

Gravity causes objects made of matter to attract one another [1], but wouldn't it be interesting if a similar principle of "like attracts like" applied to other areas of reality? What is it, for example, that causes other living beings to be attracted to us…and us to them? Why does the kitten rub on your leg, or snuggle up to your chest?

Creativity is the proper release of the darkness, the depression, and the violence that lives within us all. It is a positive release of that chaos that dwells within our own souls as well as serving as a warning to those who experience such art, to guard their own souls. Art allows us to transcend our dark, chaotic, even animalistic nature by going THROUGH the chaos, and thus transmuting it into something uniquely human, something uniquely understood, uniquely beautiful.
