Egypt has announced the discovery of two of the largest workshops ever used to mummify human and animal corpses in ancient times. A 15th century Chinese box which went unnoticed for decades has sold for £288,000 (about $358,000), smashing its expected price at auction. The box was bought for just £19 ($24) in 1946 and was expected to fetch between £6,000 and £10,000 ($7,400 and $12,400) when it went under the hammer last week, according to Dreweatts auctioneers. The piece was created during the 1430s in the Imperial workshops near the Forbidden City in Beijing, auctioneers said.

An electric guitar smashed up and signed by the late Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain has sold for almost 10 times its estimated value. The black, left-handed Fender Stratocaster went for $595,000 when it was auctioned at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York City over the weekend. The instrument was the headlining item in a three-day auction of pieces of rock history. The guitar, which had been reassembled but remains unplayable, was originally valued between $60,000 and $80,000.

Eighties kids, rejoice! Toy company Lego is about to release a 2,561-piece set celebrating " Pac-Man." The set is based on a real 1980s arcade game cabinet and comes complete with a light brick to illuminate the coin slot, Lego said on its website. "Pac-Man" was launched in Tokyo in 1980 and went on to become the most successful arcade game of all time.

A 10-foot-high bronze spider has set a new auction record for a sculpture by a woman artist, Sotheby's announced Friday. Louise Bourgeois' 1996 "Spider," which stands at over 10 feet tall and more than 18 feet across, sold for $32.8 million including fees at a sale in New York on Thursday evening. The sale also set a new auction record for a work by Bourgeois. Only four of the French-American artist's arachnid creations have ever appeared at auction.
