Cynthia A Gosselin, Ph.D., Director, The ChemQuest Group The film thickness of a paint or coating plays a critical role in the performance of the final product. While formulations govern inherent characteristics, the resulting in-service functionality, aesthetics and long-term performance are highly dependent upon application film thickness. For that reason, technical data sheets specify film thickness in coordination with the resulting physical testing performance for a wide variety of products.

Is Bigger Always Better?
By Ingrid K. Meier and Bernhard Resch, Evonik Corporation Introduction Precipitated silicas have long been manufactured by feeding aqueous sodium silicate (water glass) and sulfuric acid into a batch reactor equipped with a mechanical stirrer. Mixing in such a manner generates regions within the reactor that differ in chemical composition. Consequently, the amorphous silica particles that precipitate vary in consistency and the final product has a broad particle size distribution.
Innovation Hotspots in Powder Coatings
By Eric Casebolt, The ChemQuest Group, Inc. Although technology trends in areas such as powder coatings don’t shift dramatically from year to year—low-temperature cure and sustainability would top that list every time—it is always valuable to look at where powder coating manufacturers and raw material suppliers are actively pushing innovation.
Accelerated Alkyd Emulsification Through AI-Driven Experimentation
By Ioanna Tzortzi, Albin Jansfelt, and Marie Westerblad, Perstorp AB; Nils Honhon, Université Libre de Bruxelles; and Eirini Palaiologlou, National Technical University of Athens Introduction Waterborne alkyd binders remain an important resin technology in the coatings industry, offering a viable route to low-VOC formulations with high renewable-content potential while preserving the application characteristics and aesthetic properties traditionally associated with solventborne systems.1 As...
