Home PageWasco CountyThe Dalles Sep 8 Written By Columbia Community Connection By Joshuah Albert The Dalles, Ore., Sept. 8, 2026 — The Grasshopper Fire reached 93% containment Tuesday as warmer, drier weather allowed firefighters to return to steep terrain in the Boulder Creek drainage, where crews are working to close one of the remaining gaps in the nearly 94,000-acre fire. The lightning-caused fire remains at 93,990 acres, essentially unchanged since Monday.

The annual maintenance is intended to keep stormwater moving efficiently through the city’s drainage system, helping protect property and the environment by removing debris that can obstruct catch basins.

Sep 8 Written By Columbia Community Connection Jim E. Edens, a U.S. Army veteran and long-time resident of Hood River, passed away on August 26, 2026, at the age of 92. He was born in Washington County, Arkansas. Jim served in the 82nd Airborne Division and was assigned overseas in Europe. Jim was proud to serve and of the friendships and purpose he found during his service. After his military service, Jim built a career as a communications engineer with the United Telephone Company in Hood River.
