Malaysian Police Arrest SMS Blaster Driver Targeting Singapore Border Traffic
Malaysian police arrested a 65-year-old man after finding an SMS blaster in a car allegedly used to target commuters travelling between Johor Bahru and Singapore. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said the joint operation with police took place in Johor Bahru on August 6. Johor Bahru sits alongside one of the busiest international land crossings in the world, with around 350,000 people crossing between Malaysia and Singapore on a typical day.
European Union Spoofing and Traceback Survey Extended to 14 August

Hong Kong SMS Blaster Broadcasts WhatsApp Account Hijacking Scam
Hong Kong Police arrested a 31 year old local man on July 30 after finding him driving through Tseung Kwan O with an SMS blaster operating inside his car. Officers seized the SMS blaster and a mobile phone used to control it. Initial forensic analysis showed the device had sent more than 6,000 smishing messages. The messages impersonated official WhatsApp notifications and claimed the recipient’s account would be deleted because it had violated the platform’s rules.
Malaysian Regulator Stops SMS Blaster Bypassing Telco Filters
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) found a 23 year old local man driving a car equipped with an SMS blaster around Johor Bahru, a Malaysian city bordering Singapore, on July 24. The device transmitted a radio signal that impersonated a mobile provider and sent fraudulent messages containing web links directly to nearby phones. Initial investigations indicated the syndicate targeted busy public areas during peak hours to maximize the number of messages sent.

Hong Kong Arrests SMS Blaster Fraudster Linked to HKD1.1mn Loss
Hong Kong Police arrested a 25 year old local man on July 23 after catching him driving through the northern district of Sheung Shui with an SMS blaster operating inside his car. Officers seized the SMS blaster and a mobile phone used to control it. Initial forensic analysis showed the SMS blaster had sent more than 1,000 smishing messages. The arrest followed the theft of approximately HKD1.1mn (USD141,000) from the account of a customer of an online investment company.
