They've announced the winner of this year's Premio FIL de Literatura en Lenguas Romances -- a leading Romance-language author prize, paying out US$150,000 -- and it is Gioconda Belli; she'll get to pick up the prize at this year's Guadalajara International Book Fair, which runs 28 November through 6 December. Quite a few of her works are available in English.

The University of Iowa has announced the winner of the inaugural Jack Galef Literary Arts Award -- which is from now on to be: "presented every two years to support a younger writer who has demonstrated great talent or to recognize the work of a more established writer who has been underrecognized" -- and it is Tony Tulathimutte. As they also note: "At $150,000, it is one of the largest literary prizes awarded in the United States" -- quite the prize, indeed.

They've announced -- yes, even with a press release in English -- the longlist for this year's German Book Prize, the leading German novel prize (basically: the German imitation-Booker). Twenty titles, selected from 205 considered (meaning the jury called in 25, since apparently only 180 were submitted). It doesn't look like many of the authors with longlisted titles have published much in English translation; Ingo Schulze appears to be the author who is presumably best-known in the US/UK.
