Where to Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Chicago 2025
Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1962 against overwhelming odds. May 5 was celebrated a year later in Mexico and Los Angeles, where the U.S. and Mexican flags flew alongside each other at a parade. Although it has since declined in popularity in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo has spread across America. In Chicago, which has a large, vibrant Mexican community, that means there are many places having Cinco de Mayo specials.
The 151st Kentucky Derby takes place on Saturday, May 3 at Louisville’s Churchill Downs. Those in Chicago will still be able to catch the Run for the Roses at local bars and restaurants, where you can find food and drink specials. Be sure to arrive in style, because some spots will have contests for the best dressed.
