Cobourg Conservation Area, James Cockburn Park, is part of the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority. It is currently the subject of a dispute between the town and the GRCA regarding stormwater management fees, said Chair Vicki Mink. The Ontario government is proposing to consolidate 36 conservation authorities into seven. A new central agency will provide oversight, strategic direction, and a single point of contact.

A $35,000 Ontario Trillium Foundation Grant was recently used to construct an accessibility ramp. The group is now seeking approximately $200,000 to upgrade the washrooms.

A motion by Alderville Band Council this week was the first step in seeking personhood for Rice Lake. Earlier this week, the Alderville Band Council made a landmark decision. It may be one of the most significant in its history. A resolution was passed giving legal personhood to Rice Lake. This makes it only the second such declaration in Canada and a rarity worldwide. This decision is the first step in a three-part process that will give Rice Lake this unusual status.
