Howie Roman and Paul the K are old friends, both originally from New York though they met on Cortes almost 50 years ago. For many years they’d get together for dinner and to share music.

August 30, 2024 Peter Wrinch, CEO of Hollyhock Retreat Center, has stepped down at the end of July, 2024, from his position after taking on the role in 2017. Initially introduced to Hollyhock in 2007 through various programs, he took on the CEO role with a focus on internal culture and reconciliation with the Klahoose people, he says.

August 22, 2024 The Cortes Island Pickleball Society has recently established a Pickleball committee with the South Cortes Community Association to oversee the potential construction of Pickleball courts next to the skatepark.

Cortes Community Radio is having a legendary summer! We’re producing live and local concerts every Friday at the Village Commons tent, and we’re proud to be on the Love Fest team! This time last week we were training a group of 11-14 year olds in our first radio and podcasting camp. This fall in partnership with the SRD we’ll be distributing equipment and training volunteers across the island on neighbourhood emergency communications.

August 6, 2024 Cosmo Sheldrake has been announced as a late addition to the one day music festival on Cortes known as Lovefest. Sheldrake is a UK-based multi-instrumentalist and producer who grew up partially on Cortes. He has been releasing music for 10 years now and his third album, Eye to the Ear, was released on April 12. “He brings a different type of energy to anyone else who’s on the bill.

July 31, 2024 The Cortes Community Forest Cooperative has obtained funding to implement two wildfire risk reduction projects in the community forest, a project that’s been in the works for years. “The Forest Enhancement Society of BC gave funding to the community forest focused on fiber utilization, but since last year, they’ve been spending half their money on wildfire risk reduction and have a mandate to spend it all around the coast,” says Mark Lombard, manager of the Community Forest Coop.

July 31, 2024 A local sailing company “Calma Sailing” is offering a free sailing course aimed at providing Indigenous and lower-income people an opportunity to learn the sport. “I think sailing is a bit of an elitist sport,” said Dominik Domanski, co-owner of Calma Sailing. “It seems so inaccessible.” Funding is provided by Sail Canada’s “Sailing for All” initiative, created to support grassroots programs in delivering sailing experiences to underserved and underrepresented communities and groups.

July 19, 2024 The Cortes Island Community Foundation announced its funded projects for the 2024 Microgrants for Neighbors Program. There were thirty-two applications, which was more than last year, and fourteen projects were funded that used up their entire budget of around six thousand dollars, says Isabelle Mcknight, Executive Administrator at the Foundation.
