From working as a background artist at Capcom and Vanillaware to going independent in rural Japan, Yoshio Nishimura has spent more than three decades creating games. Veritas Tales: Witch of the Dark Castle might be his most personal project yet. Cubed3 sits down with the Digitalis Publishing founder to discuss the origins of Veritas Tales, his lifelong love of gamebooks and tabletop-inspired adventures, and how his years working at Vanillaware helped shape its distinctive hand-drawn presentation.

There is a particular trap that many visual novels with a romantic component can fall into. Put two attractive (usually anime-style) characters together, sprinkle in some flirting, add a handful of blushes and awkward shenanigans, and suddenly everything else becomes secondary. Once in a while, Game Freak is set loose from Nintendo’s Pokémon gulag machine to make something original. Most of the time, their non-Pokémon titles are fairly low-budget and experimental indie games or bizarre attempts at creating a new IP that fail to stick. As cool as Tembo and Giga Wrecker are, gamers quickly overlooked them, which is a shame because they’re solid games that show Game Freak can be more creative than making Pokémon again and again.
