On the surface, Lover’s Enigma appears to be a visually stunning and clever horror visual novel. If it had fully dedicated itself to that, it would’ve been one of the most unsettling titles in the genre. Sadly, it is held back by toxic and forced otome elements, turning it into a mixed bag. The question is whether the horror is strong enough to save the game. Few genres are as difficult to get right as psychological horror.

On the surface, Celestial Return looks like a promising RPG, taking heavy inspiration from titles such as Disco Elysium. It blends cyberpunk dystopia with paranormal elements to create a world that feels exciting to explore, and its music tracks and art style further sell that promise. However, it doesn’t take long to see that the appeal is only skin-deep and that these elements are just an artistic mishmash. It isn’t difficult to get a great idea, or even a billion.

Retro-style games stick around because they value players’ time and smarts. They deliver clear goals, instant feedback, and challenging skill ceilings that feel satisfying instead of annoying. In an age of sprawling, sometimes overwhelming AAA titles vying for everyone’s attention, these smaller games offer quick, focused bursts of fun you can jump into and step away from with ease.
