Samad Taylor knocked in a career-high three runs Monday night while Freddy Fermin homered as the San Diego Padres came from behind to post a 6-2 win over the visiting Cincinnati Reds. San Diego trailed 2-1 before Xander Bogaerts started a two-run seventh with a double off Andrew Abbott (4-4). Gavin Sheets slapped a game-tying double into the left field corner, knocking out Abbott in favor of Tejay Antone.

Jose Altuve tagged up and scored on a popup to shallow center field in the top of the 10th inning as the Houston Astros rallied for a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels in the opening game of a three-game series on Monday in Anaheim, Calif. Christian Walker went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs and Cam Smith doubled twice and drove in a run for Houston, which picked its third win in four games.

LAS VEGAS — Right-hander Joel Kuhnel, acquired by Milwaukee from the Athletics on Saturday for cash, was added to active roster before Monday’s game against the A’s to bolster the Brewers’ injury-riddled bullpen. The Brewers optioned right-hander Craig Yoho to Triple-A Nashville. Kuhnel was 1-2 with a 4.21 ERA with four saves in 25 appearances with the A’s this season. Kuhnel allowed seven runs on 12 hits in eight innings over his last seven appearances.

The Colorado Rockies are heading for their eighth losing season in a row, but there have been some bright spots for the franchise. Catcher Hunter Goodman continues to play at an all-star level and right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano is showing to be a shrewd signing. Sugano (5-4, 3.98 ERA) will make his 13th start for Colorado when it hosts the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night in Denver to open a three-game series. Colin Rea (5-3, 4.59) will be on the mound for Chicago.

The NCAA filed an appeal on Monday after a local judge granted Brendan Sorsby’s request for a temporary injunction that would make the Texas Tech quarterback eligible to play for the Red Raiders this season. Sorsby was ruled ineligible by the NCAA after admitting to gambling on college football games, including betting on his own team while playing at Indiana.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection stopped a Somali referee selected to work the World Cup from entering the United States. Omar Artan, named Africa’s best referee in 2025, was in line to become the first person from Somalia to officiate a World Cup match. CBP confirmed Monday that will no longer the case after Artan was held for “additional inspection” at Miami International Airport as part of its custom process.
