Law roundup: Neighbor handles bump in the road
Someone placed speed bumps on a private road in Kalispell and then complained to the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office that a neighbor had pulled them up. A man in Bigfork was allegedly taking pictures under women’s skirts and was escorted off the property two nights in a row. The person calling in the complaint told deputies they thought he was in jail for something unrelated. A passerby spotted a screaming woman allegedly stabbing a red bag with a knife in Kalispell.
JoAnn Fredenberg, 92
JoAnn Fredenberg, 92, was born in Minot, North Dakota, on August 8, 1933. She passed away early on July 10. She graduated high school in 1951 with a total of 12 students in her class. She attended college in Minot from 1951 to 1953 to teach 5th grade. She taught for one year in both Whitefish and Columbia Falls. She spent two summers in Yellowstone and had to hitchhike to get around. In Troy, Montana JoAnn met her husband, and they married on June 20, 1954.
Scarlets take pair of wins over AA Lakers
Luke Slyker drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the 10th inning to give the Billings Scarlets the lead in a 6-4 victory over the Kalispell AA Lakers Tuesday evening at Griffin Field. In the second game of the evening, Billings used a three-run fifth to take a 5-3 victory. Billings (18-13 overall, 9-8 in AA Legion games) took the lead in the first inning thanks to a balk from Lakers starter Tait Orme. An RBI groundout from Zach McDonald made it 2-0.

One Timer: Another new reality for college sports
As the world crossed into the second half of 2026, college sports passed into yet another phase of conference realignment. Back is the Pac-12 — more like the Pac-9 or maybe the All-State conference (except Gonzaga) — at the cost of the Mountain West. The Mountain West in turn raided the non-existent hills of Illinois to add Northern Illinois to the conference for football. They also added FCS powerhouse North Dakota State to their gridiron group.
Talk examines 1978 shootout in Eureka
In an arrest gone wrong, in 1978 Clyde Rector killed highway patrolman Mike Ren in a brief shootout on a back street of Eureka. How Rector was acquitted of murder remains a small-town Montana legend. Gary Montgomery, a Eureka resident familiar with both Ren and Rectory, will examine the background behind the shooting and trial at this month’s meeting of Northwest Montana Westerners, a local history group. The event is 7 p. m. Monday, July 20, at the Northwest Montana History Museum.
Bonita Scott, 94
Bonita Fellin Scott, 94, born September 4, 1931, to Gene and Zilda Fellin in Wallace, Idaho. Bonita left behind a legacy of love departing on June 12 in Kalispell. Bonita was preceded in death by parents Gene and Zilda Fellin, devoted husband Charles Edwin Scott, Bonnie (Scott) Seawell, and Robert Scott.
Shirley Ann Barnes, 90
Shirley Ann Barnes, 90, danced her way into heaven on June 29. She married young and had 2 children. She found love later in life with Don. Shirley Ann always celebrated the joys of life; dancing, playing cards, dressing up for holiday events, and sitting on Santa’s lap well into her 80s. She had a great heart for all, befriending everyone. Shirley Ann was a great believer in education, going back to college in her 60s to earn an associate’s degree. She was always reading.
Brenton Reynolds, 62
In loving memory of Brenton Carlysle Reynolds, III, 62, born January 5, 1963, in San Diego. He passed away in Kalispell on Sept. 13, 2025. Brenton was a kind and caring man whose greatest wish was that people would treat one another with kindness. Having experienced unkindness in his own life, he believed compassion, respect, and understanding were among life's greatest gifts, and he shared that belief with everyone he met.
