DAVID LITT AND I have several things in common: we both had the pleasure of writing books edited by Max Meltzer at Gallery (David’s is about his experience learning to surf in adulthood), our first and last names have the same number of letters, and we both admire Barack Obama’s gifts as an orator. David, however, served as one of President Obama’s speechwriters, the subject of another one of his books.

ON NEW YEAR’S EVE, my wife, Sally, and I watched one of our favorite movies, When Harry Met Sally …, which has a few memorable NYE scenes.(Some trivia: Nora Ephron’s original title, which was still in place after filming and editing, was Harry, This Is Sally. I’m glad they changed it.) In a scene shot at the Manhattan bookstore Shakespeare & Co., Harry and Sally bump into each other for the first time in years.
