This month we have an article written by guest author, Kolina; a proficient and accomplished maker whose knitting and sewing journey has had many iterations into various techniques and style focuses. And today, she’s here to talk about the evolution of that style and how style literacy can deviate from the technical skill of sewing. Who are we when we wear what we make? How do we want to be perceived, by others, as well as ourselves?

And in a blink of an eye, it’s July already. We’ve actually been carefully planning for July the last few months and it’s a shocking, yet exciting realization that we’ve come to the next chapter of Capital Fabric Supply; shipping! When we touched base last time we were just getting our feet under us and workshops underway during the winter hibernation season.

Chapters of sewing come and go; some seasons are for deep thought with a process-intensive make, some are for production while others are for pattern repeating and applying what you learn from wearing and understanding how a garment relates to your body. This Summer Capsule invites you to do just that. Simple pieces that get elevated from being sewn and understood with skill.

the undeniable appeal of a cheeky cut... Back in 2024 when we released the Stage Brief pattern, I revealed my past as a lingerie designer. For me there’s something to designing underwear the way there is with designing pants; just as many minutia and possibilities in undie iteration, so if you already have a wardrobe full of pants could we introduce the idea of a top drawer full of undies to you? designing lingerie ca.

I always equate making clothes with working with clay. We have to negotiate with fabric for it to become what we want; just like clay. Throwing on a wheel acts more like draping while hand building pottery is like flat patterning. Both materials respond to touch over theory and in most cases your hands figure out why something works before your brain can catch up. They both also have a shared relationship with gravity and nothing becomes more apparent in fabric than when working on the bias.

It has become clear from our local community coming through the fabric shop that we are fully in that long awaited seasonal shift. The desire to create and the inspired energy that comes along with it is in full force which we firmly welcome. The stripes have been restocked, workshops are filling up and the warm weather plans are kicking off on home machines around the Hudson Valley. So with that forward leaning energy in mind, we are pleased to welcome 3 new garments into the Daughter Judy fold.

As we attempt to put the longest, shortest month of the year (February) and winter behind us, we enter into a truly disorienting cusp season filled with highs and lows, blustery weather and clock shifts we still haven’t fully recovered from. We have therefore, very understandably, found ourselves seeking the comfort of hardy, stewed vegetables, familiar TV, short books and well worn pants.

As you all know, we’ve been screenshot-ing quilts left and right as our quilt-curiousness grows evermore present in our making minds. So this month we are celebrating an iconic type of quilt; the crazy quilt. You’ve probably seen one before, whether it be during an Antiques Roadshow appraisal, museum visit or deep dive into a community estate sale. Somehow through their, well, craziness they seem to tell even more elaborate tales of all the time and energy that went into them.

of who knows how many In our poll we put out on IG last week to gauge what you all are looking for when shopping for fabric online, one of the biggest responses was DENIM! (followed by KNITS!) We assure you, we will have ample curation of both when it comes time for the shop to start selling online. And really, we totally agree; you can’t beat sewing with denim, it’s oh so satisfying.

This year, we are changing up and adding to what comprises the Extracurricular category of our Substack. We’ll be releasing those roundups quarterly while this month we’re checking in from Capital Fabric Supply.
