DAV is a nonprofit charity that provides a lifetime of support for veterans of all generations and their families, helping more than 1 million veterans in positive, life-changing ways each year. Last year, the organization provided more than 163,000 rides to veterans attending medical appointments and assisted in filing over 151,000 claims for benefits. In 2021, DAV-represented veterans received more than $25 billion in earned benefits. DAV’s services are offered at no cost to all generations of veterans, their families and survivors.
DAV is also a leader in connecting veterans with meaningful employment, hosting job fairs and providing resources to ensure they have the opportunity to participate in the American Dream their sacrifices have made possible.
With over 1,200 chapters and more than 1 million members across the country, DAV empowers our nation’s heroes and their families by helping to provide the resources they need and ensuring our nation keeps the promises made to them. Source

As the national voluntary services director, one of the highlights is being able to publicly recognize DAV volunteers. Often, this is through milestone gifts we send to people when they reach a certain number of hours or drive so many miles for our Transportation Network. I try to thank volunteers I interact with and remind them how impactful their work is. And platforms like this newsletter allow me to highlight the good work you all do.
Helping caregivers locate financial resources
Caregivers navigate many issues while taking care of a loved one, including reduced income if they have left a job or cut back on work hours. Oftentimes, a caregiver may need to step back from work to provide the level of care a loved one needs. The loss of income and time away from the workforce can be worrying, but there may be resources caregivers are not aware of that can assist them.
Doubling down to serve veterans: DAV Community Impact Day 2026
April 4 marked the third annual DAV Community Impact Day. Participation doubled from last year, with more than 2,000 people taking the pledge to commit at least an hour of their time volunteering for veterans. Thank you to everyone who participated and made DAV Community Impact Day a success, and thank you to those who shared pictures and stories from your volunteer events.
South Carolina student named DAV’s top youth volunteer, earns $30K scholarship
DAV (Disabled American Veterans) has named Noah Omura of Columbia, South Carolina, as the recipient of the 2026 DAV Scholarships’ top prize of $30,000. Omura was recognized Aug. 1 during the 2026 DAV and Auxiliary National Convention in Orlando, Florida. The DAV Scholarships honor 15 students each year for their volunteer support of veterans through the Department of Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service (VAVS) Program and through DAV’s Local Veterans Assistance Program (LVAP).
Fairfax-based founder wins $10K in pitch contest for veterans in Orlando
A Fairfax, Virginia, based Army veteran and the co-founder of NextStepCare secured $10,000 in non-dilutive funding in a special pitch competition hosted by DAV (Disabled American Veterans), the congressionally chartered voice of America’s disabled veterans. Dr. Jeremy Dublon is a distinguished podiatrist with deep expertise in surgical limb preservation and complex wound care. During his service in the Army, he rose to Deputy Service Chief at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
Disabled veterans gather in Orlando, Florida, to tackle critical issues at annual national convention
DAV (Disabled American Veterans) held its annual national convention Aug. 1–4 at the Rosen Shingle Creek in Orlando, Florida. Deputy Secretary of Veterans Affairs Paul R. Lawrence, second-in-command and chief operating officer for the nation’s second-largest federal department, delivered an address to an audience of thousands of ill and injured veterans, their families, and supporters.
Ford Motor Co. donates vehicles to help veterans access health care
DAV (Disabled American Veterans) has announced a generous $200,000 donation from Ford Motor Co. to help support free transportation to medical appointments for America’s ill and injured veterans. A special check presentation took place Aug. 1 at the 2026 DAV and Auxiliary National Convention in Orlando, Florida.

VA accelerates electronic health record rollout
After years of delays, the Department of Veterans Affairs says its federal electronic health record (EHR) program is now firmly back on track. VA Secretary Douglas Collins has accelerated the program with a renewed goal: full deployment across all VA medical centers by 2031. A major governance overhaul, replacing multiple competing councils with a single decision-making body, has cut through bureaucratic delays and allowed the VA to move faster and more consistently.
Arkansas Navy veteran elected to lead national veterans organization
ERLANGER, Ky. — Service-connected disabled Navy veteran John Donovan was unanimously elected national commander of the nearly 1 million-member DAV (Disabled American Veterans) today at the organization’s 104th national convention, held in Orlando, Florida. “As your National Commander, I promise that you will see me in your chapters and communities.
