The Occasional Tamarkin
Newsletter (Digital)
I'm a longtime writer and editor who has written almost exclusively about food. For many years I was a restaurant critic and editor at Time Out Chicago. After that, I ran one of the biggest cooking sites on the internet. I wrote a cookbook based on an initiative I created for that website. And now I have a job that lets me focus on bread, cake, and everything else you can make with flour.
I have written for the New York Times, Bon Appetit, Condé Nast Traveler, Gourmet (RIP), Details (RIP), Cooking Light (RIP), Time Out New York, and a bunch of other magazines and websites. For my work as an editor and writer I have been a finalist for (and sometimes a winner of!) several awards, including an ASME (finalist), several IACP Awards (wins and nominations), many Webby Awards (wins and nominations), a Lisagor Award (finalist), and a James Beard Award (finalist).
My newsletter, The Occasional Tamarkin, is a public writing exercise where I challenge myself to write a tight essay about a broad and loose subject. Sometimes I include original recipes. Source

Gourmet is a sickness (I should know, I have it)
Issue No. 16 | The Gourmet Condition | Early Spring Advice Early on in my tenure as the editor of Epicurious, somebody handed me the remnants of Gourmet. They were paper-clipped together, peppered with Post-It notes, and organized into bulging folders. There was some prose in there, but mostly the remnants were made up of recipes and menus. Things that would have appeared in future issues had Gourmet not been shuttered in 2009. The folders were pushed onto me with relief.
