Lucinda Whitehorse, the library operations coordinator at New Mexico Tech, celebrated 28 years with the university on Sept. 30. A Socorro native, she has spent much of her life working in libraries, beginning as a student in the junior high school library. “I just like the environment,” Whitehorse said.

Students in the summer Kids Culinary Camp session learned kitchen basics, like cleaning and cutting. Delette Robinson and her husband Lamont, owners of Dough Daddy’s Delights in Belen, are giving youth in Socorro and Valencia counties the chance to learn the ins and outs of culinary arts. Delette said from the start she and Lamont wanted their bakery to be more than a place to grab a pastry.

The Socorro High School boys soccer team took the field against perennial district rival Hatch Valley on Tuesday night, delivering 80 minutes of high-intensity action for a packed home crowd. Though the visiting Bears ultimately escaped with a tight 1-0 victory, the Warriors displayed the grit and tactical growth that have fueled their strong 6-5 start as district play gets underway.

When flooding forced the closure of the bridge at Box Canyon on Highway 60 between Magdalena and Socorro last week, emergency responders quickly developed alternate plans to maintain access to medical care and essential services for residents temporarily isolated from Socorro. The bridge closed at about noon Wednesday after heavy rainfall associated with the recent storm system damaged the structure, according to Magdalena Village Fire Chief Charlie Blaylock.

SOCORRO — The Socorro Lady Warriors volleyball team successfully defended their home court on Monday, Oct. 5, sweeping both the junior varsity and varsity matches against the visiting Mountainair Mustangs in a makeup game rescheduled from the previous week. JV sweeps in two The JV match leaned heavily in Socorro’s favor from the opening serve, with the Lady Warriors taking straight sets, 25-15 and 25-16.

New Mexico Tech’s annual 49ers celebration will return Oct. 15-18, bringing alumni, students, faculty, staff and community members together for a weekend of campus traditions, music, food and activities. The weekend gets an early start Friday, Oct. 16, with Paint the M from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Participants will help repaint the iconic “M” on Socorro Peak, a longtime New Mexico Tech tradition. Organizers describe the event as an opportunity to show Tech pride while enjoying views of Socorro.

Flooding at the home of Linda Murillo. As floodwaters surged across rural properties near Luis Lopez on Sept. 25, Linda Murillo believed the berm protecting her home would hold. Instead, she watched water overtop the barrier, rush through her fields and flood her house within minutes. "It was awful," Murillo said. "I could feel the shaking of the ground. That's how hard the water was coming in." Murillo was home when the flooding began.
