Adelaide wants to be taken seriously. LIV Golf, the Fringe, WOMADelaide, Illuminate, Gather Round, a MotoGP on the horizon. The city sells itself to the world as a festival capital, a global events destination, a place worth flying to. And then, at 3am, it locks the doors and tells everyone the party is over. You cannot claim world city status while running your nightlife like a country pub with a nervous publican.

Every few years the transparent DJ screen comes back around. Smithson Martin's Emulator arrived about fifteen years ago, put a projector in a base, threw an image onto frosted glass and briefly convinced a lot of people that the future of performance was a DJ waving at a pane of Perspex. It became Touch Innovations, the Elite and the XG followed, and then the idea quietly went away again.

Somewhere in the long tradition of tools that exist mainly to stop producers finishing anything, a new one has arrived. It is called YPC, it lives at ypc2000.fun, it costs nothing, and it does something delightfully simple: it takes a YouTube video and lays it out across your computer keyboard like an MPC. It is not really a plugin, more a browser toy that behaves like a piece of hardware. Paste in a link, and sixteen pads are assigned to random timestamps within the video.

Not since the Vestax VRX-2000 has an off the shelf record cutting lathe felt like a genuine shift in who gets to make a record. Teenage Engineering's new APC-2, built with Viennese analogue specialists SUPERSENSE, is the first machine in more than two decades that looks capable of picking up where Vestax left off, and it arrives with rather more engineering behind it. The context matters.

For Josh Wink, it came as a decades-old recording. While digging through his archives in 2025, the Philadelphia producer and DJ stumbled upon a tape of his first-ever Los Angeles performance, a rave called "Futurama" held in 1994. Hearing it again after more than thirty years brought back a flood of memories and a renewed connection to the sounds and energy that shaped his early years. That rediscovery became the spark behind "Futurama," Wink's new single out now on Ovum Recordings.

Ricky Meakin is an international DJ, producer and events curator working in Balearic club culture and what he calls extraterrestrial beats.
