During the arrest on Thursday 20 August, authorities confiscated drugs and laboratory equipment with an estimated street value of R600 million, as well as an undisclosed amount of cash. Military veterans’ advocacy group says lack of funds no excuse to evade a High Court order
In May this year the Gauteng High Court ordered the Department of Military Veterans (DMV) to provide benefits to former soldiers – an order that seemingly will not be fulfilled – drawing scathing reaction from the Amalgamated Veterans of SA (AVSA), the newest addition to the ranks of veteran associations/organisations.
The exercise injecting life into the SAAF
The South African Air Force (SAAF) will conduct its annual force preparation exercise, Exercise Eagle Dawn II, in the Northern Cape during October. The exercise will begin with a command post exercise before transitioning to live aerial operations. For most air forces, this would be routine. In South Africa, however, simply conducting a force preparation exercise is noteworthy.

Chad’s quiet return to French military support
Chad and France appear to be reviving a longstanding military partnership that N’Djamena abruptly ended in November 2024. The rapprochement reflects enduring mutual interests, but also the limits of Chad’s efforts to diversify its security partnerships. How Chad manages France’s return without undermining its sovereignty claims or its Sahelian relations will be the critical test. The two have enjoyed military cooperation since the mid-1960s, after Chad’s independence from France.
Parts of 4 SAI in the dark – again
Power supply to 4 SA Infantry (SAI) Battalion was down again this week and although apparently not affecting the entire base, the outage saw the SA National Defence Union (Sandu) once more step into the breech. A previous legal demand by the Pretoria headquartered military trade union when the Middelburg, Mpumalanga, SA Army Infantry Formation base was left powerless for 17 days from late July drew speedy response from SA National Defence Force (SANDF) management.

The company is set to exhibit the aircraft at Egypt’s El Alamein International Airshow, 8-10 September 2026, and at South Africa’s Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD) 2026 Expo, 16-20 September.
Can Mozambique’s new counter-terrorism centre deliver?
In November 2025, Mozambique established the National Centre for the Prevention and Combating of Terrorism and Violent Extremism (CTC) to coordinate its responses to terrorism. This is a long-overdue step after nine years of torment by Islamic State-backed insurgents, during which over 6 700 people have been killed in nearly 2 500 attacks in northern Mozambique. Terrorist groups exploit local grievances to recruit and radicalise youth who carry out attacks.
Cachalia says soldiers are making a difference in anti-crime operations
Replying to a Parliamentary question, Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia bluntly said “no” when asked if the deployment of soldiers to gang-ridden areas isn’t working and hasn’t curbed violence. Cachalia replaced Senzo Mchunu, suspended over apparent ties to organised crime syndicates and interference in political killing investigations on 13 July last year. Cachalia was sworn into office on 1 August 2025.
