A taxi driver in the Sea to Sky is paying the price for speeding. According to Mounties, on Sept. 7, at 11 a.m., on Highway 99 near Porteau Cove, a BC Highway Patrol officer on a motorcycle recorded a white Toyota Corolla doing 133 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. The Toyota was a taxi with a passenger in the back seat who had just lost their own vehicle to an excessive speeding impound, according to a news release from BC Highway Patrol.

EDMONTON — The Edmonton Oilers have signed forward Alex Formenton to a one-year contract worth US$850,000. He was one of five players from Canada's 2018 world junior team who were acquitted last year on sexual assault charges stemming from an encounter with a woman after a Hockey Canada gala in London, Ont. An independent appeal board ruled last month that the players breached the Hockey Canada code of conduct, but Formenton was the only one eligible for immediate reinstatement from suspension.

The average asking price for a rental unit in August was $2,035, down 4.8 per cent compared with a year ago. A monthly report from Rentals.ca and Urbanation says that marks the steepest year-over-year drop since March. Average asking rents have now fallen year-over-year for 23 consecutive months, with prices down seven per cent compared with 2024. Rents were essentially flat on a monthly basis, down 0.1 per cent from July after four consecutive monthly increases through the spring and early summer.

Toronto North Racquet Club has added three Canadians to its roster ahead of the upcoming World Team Tennis season. MONTREAL — Former Montreal Canadiens winger André Pronovost, who won four straight Stanley Cups with the Habs, has died at 90. The Canadiens say Pronovost died Tuesday, with the cause of death not disclosed. The Shawinigan Falls, Que., native spent 10 seasons in the NHL with Montreal, Boston, Detroit and Minnesota. Pronovost was part of four consecutive Stanley Cup championship teams with Montreal from 1957 to 1960.

It was hard to escape the election undercurrent in Premier David Eby’s press conference-turned-rally focused on the American trade dispute Tuesday. Maybe it was the crowd of flag-waving locals used as props in Victoria’s Inner Harbour, the paid staffers holding the giant Canadian flag in the background or the Instagram-famous musician who introduced the premier with a homestyle rap about poutine, Tim Hortons and cold Canadian weather.
