As the English countryside rolled past on my way from Manchester Airport, dotted with adorable sheep and cows, I was excited to start my new adventure in Derby. Moving to a new country to pursue higher education is no small feat, but Derby quickly became my second home. From New Jersey to the East Midlands My journey as an international student here has been filled with discovery, growth and a renewed sense of purpose.

Balancing my time between studies, running a business, and competing in sport is no easy task. Some weeks can be overwhelming, but the support I’ve received at Derby - from lecturers to university services - has made all the difference. Whether it’s flexibility with my course schedule or opportunities to connect with people who can help grow my business, Derby has truly helped me thrive in multiple areas. I would be lying to you if I said I had it all mapped out. As a young person I did not expect to go to university, I simply thought it was for extremely smart and wealthy people. I went into work when I finished school but soon found myself wanting to explore other options. When I decided that university was something I wanted to do it was a little overwhelming, and I had so many questions: What university?Which course? Why is the same subject different between universities?

Over recent days there has been community disorder and unrest across some towns and cities in the UK, which is distressing to see. Derby has been unaffected but we will continue to engage our community partners to do all we can to ensure that this city and region celebrates community diversity and inclusion. As home to a global community of students, the University of Derby is proud of its welcoming and supportive environment.

Professional footballer Millie Bright who captained England to the Women’s World Cup Final in 2023 is among those to receive an honorary degree from the University of Derby later this month. Born in Derbyshire, Millie first started playing for local team, Killamarsh Dynamos. She signed her professional contract with Chelsea in 2015, winning the 2015, 2018, 2021, 2022 and 2023 FA Women’s Cups.

Last September, the image of a felled tree in Northumberland sparked global outrage. This was the iconic Sycamore Gap tree, known to many by its appearance in the 1991 film, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, starring Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman. The solitary tree, planted in the nineteenth century as a landscape feature to complement the natural dip in the ground alongside Hadrian's Wall, was cut down overnight in an act of criminal damage that remains under investigation.

Kate Haresnape - Web and Digital Content Officer As the daughter of a former professional basketball player who once represented England, it was, no doubt, somewhat disappointing for my father that I didn't quite follow the high standards of athleticism he had set in our family. In school, I was fine at sports but it wasn't my passion like it was for him. I tried swimming, boxing, ballet and running but it wasn't until my mid-twenties that I found an activity that really worked for me.

We get opportunities such as attending conferences organised by the Institute of Acoustics, webinars from top audio industry professionals, and my personal favourite is attending concerts and events. Here we get practical experience to prepare us for the entertainment industry.
