DEVILS LAKE — In a game where the Firebirds were shut out through the first three quarters, they let a 14-13 slip away with 24.6 seconds left. Bismarck St. Mary’s failed a two-point version attempt. But No. 2 Devils Lake, in its first home game in nearly a month, trailed 19-14. As the local contingent at Roller Field sat bundled up in hats and coats for the first time in 2026, the energy felt deflated. But the team didn’t.

FORT TOTTEN — Four Winds came so close to drastically improving its playoff chances. But the Indians couldn’t hold on to what would have been an upset win over Cavalier, letting a 24-0 halftime lead get away in a 34-24 loss last Friday. While the defeat was a hit to Four Winds’ playoff hopes, it’s not the end for the Indians. Here are the nine-man, Region 2 standings entering Friday.

The Firebirds are rolling, continuing to match last season’s progression. Then-No. 4 Devils Lake (4-1, 1-0) won its region opener against Jamestown (1-4, 0-1) on Friday at Charlotte and Gordon Hansen Stadium, 26-18. It was the fourth straight win for the Firebirds after losing to No. 1 Kindred in their season opener. Here were some of the keys to victory.

Lake Region State College is serving 1,840 students this fall, with encouraging growth in several programs and a strong incoming freshman class. Fall 2026 enrollment includes 485 full-time students. While that number is slightly below the 490 full-time students enrolled in fall 2025, it remains higher than the fall 2024 count. In fall 2025, LRSC served 1,916 students, including 490 full-time students, who generated 14,175 total credit hours.

The American Cancer Society reports that as many as 10 percent of breast cancer cases are thought to be caused by gene changes passed down through families. Those changes, also known as mutations, can affect a number of genes, including the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, which both play a role in tumor suppression. A woman with a mutation in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene has up to a 70 in 100 chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.

DEVILS LAKE — The grandstand project at DLYA Field appears to be making some progress. The installation of a new baseball grandstand has been in the works for a while. Progress had stalled recently while the Lake Region Baseball Boosters waited for a quote. But the quote came in, and now progress is accelerating. Kirk Baeth represented the boosters as a visitor in Tuesday’s monthly Devils Lake Park Board meeting. He shared the information he received via email with the board.

(Sept. 21, 2026) – The Drought Disaster Livestock Relief program has exhausted its $4.1 million in funding roughly a month after it was activated by an executive order from North Dakota’s governor. Reice Haase, director of the Department of Water Resources, told lawmakers on the Water Topics Overview Committee last week that the program has helped fund 470 projects proposed by 369 ranchers across the state.

I scooped up the dead kitten on the same day that I heard of a friend’s death. As I carried it on the shovel, I felt a deep sense of futility. Why had the Lord allowed the kitten to even be born?
