Nintendo has confirmed that it is preparing a new version of the Switch 2 to abide by new European regulations requiring replaceable batteries in electronic devices, while also announcing that the original generation of Switch models will be discontinued in Europe from 2027.

Now that the Steam Machine has begun to reach customers, Valve has released official Windows 11 drivers for the PC via the Steam Support site. Right now, that includes four components: a graphics driver, a Wi-Fi driver, a Bluetooth driver and an SD card reader driver; all other components ought to work out of the box with the default Windows driver library, and the OS should install just fine with default drivers.

Microsoft has announced that thousands of Xbox employees have lost their jobs today, as part of wider cuts across Microsoft in a bid to make the business "healthy". In a memo attributed to Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, some 3200 people will be laid off "throughout FY2027" (which runs until March 31st, 2028), with 1600 of those losses happening immediately. As part of the changes, four internal Xbox studios will leave the brand.

In the wake of Sony's almost casual three-paragraph announcement that it was going to stop printing physical discs from January 2028, there has been a strong response from all corners of the gaming world. Following Sony's announcement that it was ceasing production of physical PlayStation games from 2028, hinting towards an all-digital PS6, Tom Warren at The Verge has reported that Xbox employees are now testing a disc-to-digital entitlement programme, which would be a necessary component to preserve backwards compatibility ahead of a hypothetical disc-free Project Helix console - and a "likely" similar halt in production of Xbox game discs.
