As the voice of Spike and the Gimme Gimmes, Spike Slawson fronts punk rock’s ultimate cover band, transforming pop hits and show tunes to country classics into full-throttle punk songs. Disarray caught up with Spike to talk about how he became the Gimmes’ frontman, the art of reinventing familiar songs, and what keeps the band going after all these years. Mike had seen me sing with a cover band with guys from Psychotic Pineapple and the Rubinoos.

Formed in the Bay Area in 2023, Cuva Bimö is what you get when a Craigslist ad actually works. The band came together after guitarist and vocalist Pete and drummer Ricky found themselves with a few song ideas and fewer people to play them. They turned to Craigslist, where the search produced at least one memorable audition involving a 30-pack of Bud Light and musicianship that deteriorated with every beer. Thankfully, that lineup didn’t make the cut.

If Psychosonic had to file their music under one section of a record store, the Los Angeles band would throw themselves into punk. The twin brothers behind Thing of Twins have been playing together since their teens, but their musical education started before they ever formed a band. We recently sat down with Inland Empire duo SOxGNAR, made up of Dean (drums, vocals) and Scotty Audio (guitar, vocals).
