A full decade before Ron Howard’s Eden, a very fine documentary had been made about those pesky European explorers who settled in the Galapagos Islands, looking for some sort of alternative to society. I loved the documentary and wanted to spread the word about it.

Author Harold Schechter recently took Netflix to task for the largely inaccurate program Monster: The Ed Gein Story. “Pure, over the top fabrication,” was what he called it. Schechter has long been one of my favorite writers, and for my money his book on Gein is a classic of its type.
