Alex Ovechkin wants to reach 1,000 goals (and he won’t make it this season)
A little over a year ago, Alex Ovechkin became the NHL's all-time leading regular-season goal-scorer. He surpassed the record of 894 set by Wayne Gretzky… and the Russian now has 929 goals to his credit. And one wonders if anyone will ever break that record. Especially since Ovechkin will be back in the NHL for the 2026–27 season. He's signed a new one-year contract and will have the opportunity to add to his goal total.
Red Wings GM: Brendan Shanahan Among the Names Starting to Be Mentioned
This morning, we learned that Steve Yzerman is no longer the general manager of the Red Wings. Yzerman, who had held the position since 2019, has transitioned into an advisory role. You're free to believe that version of the story or to believe another one suggesting that the team wanted to sideline him without firing him. As a result, there are currently more questions than answers coming out of Detroit. And one of them is what will happen with Dylan Larkin. NEW: The Yzerman Era is over in Detroit.
Darnell Nurse Trade: Nikita Zadorov Told the Oilers “No”
On July 1, Darnell Nurse was traded to the San Jose Sharks. But if that happened, it might be thanks to Nikita Zadorov. Why do I say that? Because, in fact, there's a rumor going around that the Oilers and the Bruins were close to a deal. Nurse would have headed to Boston, and Zadorov would have ended up in Edmonton… with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. The catch? According to Nick Kypreos (Real Kyper & Bourne), it was Zadorov who reportedly blocked the trade.
A former first-round pick of the Patriots could soon be changing teams
Kayshon Boutte's future with the New England Patriots seems increasingly uncertain. While his name has been circulating in trade rumors for several months, new reports suggest that a trade could finally materialize before the start of the upcoming NFL season. According to Sports Illustrated reporter Albert Breer, Patriots management is open to finding a new team for the young wide receiver.
Willson Contreras won’t hear of leaving Boston
The Boston Red Sox have been on fire for the past few days. The All-Star break is undoubtedly coming at a bad time for them. With nine straight wins, the playoffs are within reach if the team can keep up the pace. It's not a sure thing, of course, but it's still possible. But never mind that—it's clear that Craig Breslow has been thinking, in recent weeks, about his options should he ever have to leave.
Surprise Retirement in the NFL
Will Grier's NFL career is officially over. The Carolina Panthers have confirmed that the 31-year-old quarterback has decided to end his professional career, just a few months after returning to the organization that drafted him in 2019. Selected in the third round of the NFL Draft, Grier entered the league with high expectations following a stellar college career at West Virginia. Despite his potential, he never managed to establish himself as a permanent starting quarterback at the highest level.
Cutter Gauthier needs to calm down
Leo Carlsson will earn $18 million per year for the next five seasons. Is this a well-deserved salary? Has the player proven that he deserves to earn that much money? It doesn't matter. It's a done deal now, and it comes with some complications in Anaheim as well.
David Reinbacher: Here’s what the CH wants him to work on this summer
David Reinbacher made progress last season. The defenseman played a total of 63 games in 25-26 (including two with the Canadiens), and even though he was injured a few times, the fact that he played so much is good news. After all, we remember that he had more health issues the previous season—his first in North America. Now, the Canadiens would like to see him make a splash at training camp.
