Long one of Toyota’s best-selling models in the US, the Corolla is also the all-time best-selling model in the world, recently topping 56 million units globally, which is more than double the number of Volkswagen Beetles ever sold. Even today, with crossovers capturing a significant part of the market, annual global sales are approximately one million units.
Driven: 2026 Volkswagen Golf GTI
The Volkswagen Golf is one of best-known vehicles in the world, perhaps even more so than the venerable Beetle that preceded it. At times, the Golf was known in the US as the Rabbit, but in more recent years we have seen the global name prevail in the states. As VW’s subcompact model, the Golf has long played a pivotal role in bringing customers to the brand. But as with many manufacturers, the switch to utility vehicles means car models are scarce.

Related CX-70 images found here. Mazda has been moving steadily upmarket for more than a decade. With the 2026 Mazda CX-70, the company pushes that strategy even further. This midsize crossover is aimed at drivers who want space, performance, and upscale touches—but without the third row found in the CX-90. The result is a two-row SUV that feels unusually refined for a mainstream brand. In many ways, the CX-70 is Mazda’s answer to buyers who might otherwise consider an Acura, Lexus, or Audi.
At a Glance: Rivian R2
Electric vehicles have reached an interesting moment. Early adopters already own one. Traditional buyers are curious but cautious. Somewhere in between sits the Rivian R2, a compact electric SUV that may become the company’s most important vehicle yet. If Rivian’s earlier models felt like premium adventure gear—think Patagonia jackets on wheels—the R2 is closer to a well-designed daypack. Still rugged. Still purposeful. Just more accessible. The R2 is expected to arrive this year.
