CHENNAI: Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin on Tuesday (July 14) condemned the alleged custodial death of Sabarivarman in Nagercoil and demanded stringent action against the police personnel involved. Referring to the police version, Udhayanidhi said the department had claimed that Sabarivarman was in good health at the time of his arrest and died after falling ill following the enquiry.

Further, Veerapandian said if need arises, the Communist parties will contest local body polls independently. “Such a decision will be taken in consultation with other democratic forces,” he said. On reports of political defections, Veerapandian said horse-trading was a culture associated with some northern states. “Whoever indulges in horse-trading is unacceptable,” he said.

CHENNAI: A severe heatwave has gripped interior Tamil Nadu, with Madurai Airport recording a blistering maximum temperature of 42.5°C (108.5°F) on Tuesday (July 14). This is the highest maximum temperature observed by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) across India on Tuesday, aligning with regional forecasts predicting extreme heatwave conditions over parts of interior Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana.

CHENNAI: The Madurai bench of the Madras High Court upheld the life sentence awarded to a convict for sexually exploiting and blackmailing multiple women, while cautioning young girls and women against sharing intimate photos or videos online. In its order, the bench comprising Justices Anand Venkatesh and KK Ramakrishnan included an advisory in English, Hindi and Tamil, warning women that sharing intimate material digitally could result in irreversible consequences.

CHENNAI: A 67-year-old life convict died while undergoing treatment for health complications at Government Stanley Hospital on Tuesday (July 14). Rajkumar of Tiruvallur's Tiruvallangadu was arrested under the Pocso Act in 2014 and was sentenced to life imprisonment after conviction. He was recently diagnosed with cancer and was shifted to the Stanley Hospital for intensive care, said prison officials. On Tuesday (July 14), he died without responding to treatment.
